San Vittore is a municipality in the Moesa region in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland .

The sword and the cross staff are the attributes of the church patrons Saint Victor and John the Baptist . The parish name refers to Victor's name.

The municipality borders on the canton of Ticino to the west and lies on both sides of the Moësa and is only a few kilometers away from the Ticino capital Bellinzona . The community area to the left of the river is unpopulated and wooded. On the right side of the river, the community stretches far to the north to an altitude of 2278 m above sea level. M. at Mot Ciarin .

The community consists of the village and the three kilometers to the west of Monticello (337 m above sea level) directly on the canton border. Of the entire municipal area of ​​almost 22 km², 1469 hectares are covered by forest and wood. 341 ha are agriculturally usable and 331 ha are unproductive areas (mostly mountains). The remaining 62 hectares are settlement areas.

The municipality includes a long exclave, the Alpe di Rescignaga , which borders Italy in the south and is completely surrounded by the municipality of Roveredo . Neighboring communities are Buseno and Calanca as well as Arbedo-Castione in the canton of Ticino and Gravedona ed Uniti (formerly Germasino ) in Italy.

history

The village was first mentioned in 1168 under the then name sancto Victore . The oldest church is Santa Croce in Campagna; San Lucio in Palla and St. Mary's Church in Monticello are also old. The main church is dedicated to Santi Giovanni Battista e Vittore. The Collegiata or the Canons' Monastery with 6 Canons in San Vittore was founded in 1219 by Heinrich v. Sax founded. They had pastoral care in both Misox and Calancatal .
