Sonic the Hedgehog is an American film starring the computer game character Sonic . It was released in theaters in Germany on February 13, 2020 and in the United States a day later.

action

Sonic is a 15 year old blue anthropomorphic hedgehog who loves chillidogs and car chases. Nobody can run as fast as Sonic, who can reach supersonic speeds. In his world he was hunted by an ant urchin clan, whereupon his protector Longclaw helped him to escape to earth. Ten years later, Sonic lives happily on earth in the small town of Green Hills, Montana . Still, the hedgehog longed for a real friend. After realizing how lonely he is, he becomes depressed and starts running around a baseball field. This creates tremendous energy and paralyzes electricity throughout the Pacific Northwest. The authorities then hire the mad scientist Dr. Robotnik to investigate this anomaly.

In search of a safe place, he meets the small town police officer Tom Wachowski, who paralyzes him with a sedative out of fear. Sonic stumbles through it and his portal rings end up in San Francisco . When Sonic later wakes up, Tom helps him escape because Dr. Robotnik broke in and threatened both him and Sonic. Robotnik finds a sting from Sonic and declares Tom a criminal. Tom and Sonic embark on a trip to San Francisco to retrieve the rings, always followed by Dr. Robotnik's destructive machines. Despite their differences, the two soon become friends and Tom finds out that Sonic has always wanted a real boyfriend. Sonic, on the other hand, confronts Tom with the fact that he wants to leave Green Hills to do a real police job in San Francisco. Sonic accuses Tom of leaving his real friends. After being attacked by Robotnik, Sonic passes out.

Tom brings Sonic to his wife Maddie Wachowski, who Tom helps Sonic to help. The three reach the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco, where Sonic's rings are located. The three are confronted by Robotnik, which leads to Tom and Maddie being pushed from the house by Sonic. Sonic then saves her with a portal ring and runs away. Robotnik, who has now also reached supersonic speed thanks to Sonic's sting, follows him all over the world. Soon they are back in Green Hills, where Robotnik defeats Sonic. Tom tries to stop Robotnik and calls Sonic a friend, whereupon he stands up with his bare strength and regains the strength that Robotnik had stolen from him. After a final battle, Tom and Sonic transport Robotnik through a portal ring to a planet made of mushrooms. After Robotnik is defeated, Tom and Maddie decide to stay in Green Hills and take Sonic in as a new member of the family. Robotnik, on the other hand, survived his fall on the mushroom planet and is planning his revenge.

In a mid-credits scene, Tails, a two-tailed fox from Sonic's world, finds a way to earth.

Criticism of Sonic's design

In early May 2019, after the trailer for the film was posted on YouTube , many Sonic fans felt that Sonic's design looked too human. Some of them put edited versions of the trailer, in which they built in the Sonic known from computer games, online on YouTube. On May 2, 2019, the film's director Jeff Fowler announced on Twitter that Sonic would be redesigned in response to audience complaints. The release date of the film initially remained unchanged, leading to concerns that reworking the protagonist could overwhelm the visual effects. On May 24, 2019, Fowler announced on Twitter that the film would be postponed to February 14, 2020.
