DeAndre Cortez Way (born July 28, 1990 in Chicago , Illinois ), known by his stage name Soulja Boy , a short form of Soulja Boy Tell 'Em , is an American rapper . He became known with his debut single Crank That (Soulja Boy) , with which he reached the top of the US Billboard charts in mid-September 2007 . His stage name "Soulja Boy" is a modification of "DjSoulya".

Life

Musical career as a solo artist

DeAndre Cortez Way was born in Chicago in 1990, but the family moved to Atlanta when Way was six years old. At 14, he moved to Batesville with his father . Even then, interested in music, his father set up a music studio for him where he could try it out. At the same time he founded his own independent label Slacks on Deck Entertainmenz . Way then began recording music and releasing it under the pseudonym Soulja Boy. To do this, he used sites like MySpace , YouTube and Soundclick .

In 2007 his single Crank That was released . Especially the accompanying music video with his unmistakable dance style made the 17-year-old artist famous. His dance became a phenomenon and his fans began to imitate this style and upload their own videos. At the same time, his MySpace page received 10 million views.

Interscope Records then discovered the artist and signed the artist. They re-released the single and used it in the television series Entourage , among others . Soulja Boy became the first artist who could book over 3 million music downloads of a song. The single reached # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was also nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rap category and received three times platinum . The album Souljaboytellem.com was released on October 4, 2007. At the MTV Video Music Awards 2007 he was allowed to appear with Kanye West . Especially at the beginning, the reactions to his new style were very mixed. For example, while Allmusic wrote a positive review, it was panned by Entertainment Weekly . The reactions ranged from a hip-hop re-inventor to a one-hit wonder .

On December 16, 2008, his second solo album called iSouljaBoyTellem was released and charted at number 43 on the American Billboard charts . It contains the two hit singles Kiss Me Thru the Phone with Sammie and Turn My Swag On . In the first, Chris Brown was supposed to sing the hook, but declined with thanks. Turn My Swag On served as the template for Money Boy's hit single Dreh den Swag auf , which made the Austrian rapper famous overnight.

In 2010, the album The DeAndre Way followed , which reached number 90 on the US Billboard charts and was his first failure. The three singles also only achieved top 50 placements.

Between 2010 and 2015, Soulja Boy released a large number of mixtapes, while work on the fourth album stagnated. Eventually he also lost his record deal. He then continued independently with his own label. In 2014, Soulja Boy was arrested after carrying a loaded gun in his car. He was sentenced to probation and community hours and is no longer allowed to own weapons or ammunition. He made a name for himself as a serious rapper through features with Nicki Minaj and Busta Rhymes . In 2015 his album Loyalty was released , which however did not allow him to build on his old successes.

The album The Best to Ever Do It followed in 2016, another flop. Soulja Boy has been working on his comeback since then, but despite a viral video in 2018, it is still a long time coming. In 2019, the rapper was sentenced to 240 days in prison for violating his suspended sentence.

Stacks on Decks Entertainment

In 2004 Soulja Boy founded the label Stacks on Decks Entertainment (SODMG), through which he not only released his own albums, but also signed various artists. Among other things, he discovered Lil B and promoted the career of Riff Raff . However, on May 30, 2016, he announced a restart of SODMG via Twitter . In 2019 he signed Lil 100 and 24hrs .

Clothing line

In 2008, Way's first clothing line, SOD clothing, and a signature brand for the shoe brand Yums were launched. In 2012 his fashion lines Ocean Gang and BLVD followed. Supply.

Music production

Soulja Boy has also been producing music for other artists since 2009. To do this, he uses a computer program from FL Studio . His best-known productions include Get Silly by VIC , Marco Polo by Bow Wow , Wowzers by Lil Wayne and Yasss Bish by Nicki Minaj .

World Poker Fund Holdings

In May 2016, Soulja Boy signed a five-year deal with World Poker Fund Holding . The contract is valued at $ 400 million. How much the artist actually gets from the deal, however, depends on the further development of the brand.

SouljaGame

In 2018 Soulja Boy launched its own video game console , the SouljaGame. However, it was an emulator for Nintendo and Sega games. He announced three more systems, this time for emulating Game Boy , Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 . After a threatened lawsuit from Nintendo, however, he withdrew the game console. However, in 2019 he released another game console, this time in the style of a handheld console .

Music genre

Soulja Boy's rap style is a strong departure from the style of rapping that was common in the 1990s and 2000s. The style is choppy, sentences are shortened and slang words are often strung together. The words are sometimes stretched so that words that don't actually rhyme do rhyme with each other. There is also a strong influence of the Southern Hip Hop style, especially the crunk . There are also melodic hooks . Often the songs are not specially elaborated, but are published immediately after recording through various channels, especially mix tapes.

Private life

On December 30, 2008, Way was robbed at his home. The details are largely unknown. The number of perpetrators varied from three to six people who are said to have ambushed him with AK-47s and pistols. The incident hit the headlines after a posted video went online.

On March 22, 2011, Way's younger half-brother died in a car accident. He was only 14 years old.
