The Catholic parish church of Saint-Yves in La Roche-Maurice , a parish in the Finistère department in the French region of Brittany , was built in the early 16th century. The large leaded glass window in the choir with scenes of the Passion and the rood screen has been preserved from the middle of the 16th century . In 1916, the church with the ossuary was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as a Monument historique .

history

The church was probably built on the site of the castle chapel of the Lords of Rohan , who had owned the castle of La Roche-Maurice since around 1330. In 1363 the chapel was consecrated to Saint Ivo Hélory , the patron saint of lawyers who is venerated as the national saint of Brittany. The current church dates from the early 16th century. The oldest date, the year 1539, can be found on the large Passion window in the choir. The year 1589 is carved on the bell tower.

architecture

Bell tower and west portal

The tower on the west facade has two bell floors, which are surrounded by balustrades and studded with pinnacles at the corners . They are crowned by an octagonal stone top decorated with crabs . The west portal is cut into the ground floor of the tower, framed by a gable and two columns with Ionic capitals . In a niche above the cornice stands the sculpture of St. Ivo, the patron saint of the church. In the niches of the two buttresses you can see the figures of the Dominican Vinzenz Ferrer, who was born in Valencia and who died in Vannes , and the Franciscan Paschalis Baylon , who also came from Spain .

South portal

South portal

The church has a richly carved portal on its south side instead of the vestibules that are otherwise common in Brittany. It is carved in Kersantite and is dated to the 1550s. The robes and the archivolts are decorated with small figures depicting the apostles with their attributes . Two arched doors are cut into the portal. On Trumeaupfeiler under a canopy one is Stoup attached, decorated in the Renaissance style with heads. The figure on the tympanum may represent the abbot and Breton Saint Maudez. A further keel arch decorated with a finial surrounds the portal.
