The St. Agatha Church is a Catholic parish church in Kleinblittersdorf , Saarland , Saarbrücken regional association . It bears the patronage of the early Christian virgin and martyr Agatha of Catania . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

The church was built between 1906 and 1908 according to plans by the architect Wilhelm Hector ( Saarbrücken-St. Johann ). Building contractor Peter Hoffsteter (Kleinblittersdorf) was responsible for executing the plans. On May 24, 1911, the consecration took place by the then Trier Bishop Michael Felix Korum .

During the Second World War , the building suffered severe damage, which could not be repaired until 1948 due to a lack of building materials. In 1950, the church was rebuilt. In 1966 restoration and reconstruction work was carried out on the sanctuary . In 1988/89 the church underwent a restoration.

architecture

The church building was built as a three-aisled basilica with a cross-shaped floor plan in the neo-Romanesque style. Red sandstone was used as building material . The nave of the church is divided into a central nave and two side aisles. A transept adjoins the nave , followed by the choir with a semicircular apse . The ceilings of the ships are formed by ribbed vaults.

Furnishing

Numerous artists and craftsmen were involved in the design of the church . The wood sculptor Cyriak Huber ( Oberkirch (Baden) ) created the figure of St. Joseph on the Joseph Altar, a Madonna and the 14 Stations of the Cross in 1957 based on a design by the master painter Josef Quack (Kleinblittersdorf) . The porch with wood carvings on the woman's side, the cupboard in the sacristy with wood carvings, 3 chairs with wood carvings, a pew in the side aisle on the woman's side with a carved head, as well as the inlaid altar steps come from carpenter Michel Niederländer und Sons (Kleinblittersdorf) . Carpenter Gottfried Brettar (Kleinblittersdorf) made a wooden bridal chair with carved symbols.

The sacred art in the church includes a Madonna from the 2nd half of the 18th century from the former Wintringen church (today the chapel), which was erected as a replacement for the St. Mary's altar removed in 1966. Another art object that originally comes from the Wintringer Chapel is the figure of Saint Anthony . Also worth mentioning are the figure of St. Agatha from the old Agathenkirche, the Pietà in the baptistery, the windows in the choir with representations of St. Barbara , St. Apollonia , St. Catherine and St. Cäcilia , the window above the Joseph altar with the Image of a dove and the window above the figure of the Madonna with the image of the Eye of God .

The first bells in the church were made in 1908 at the Mabilon bell foundry in Saarburg . It was a ringing consisting of four bells (St. Joseph, Mother of God, St. Agatha, Bernhard) with the tone sequence B, D, F, G. With the exception of the Bernhard bell, all bells had to be given for war purposes in the First World War . In 1922, the Mabilon foundry from Saarburg again commissioned a new bell. Three new bells (St. Joseph, Maria, Agatha) with the tone sequence C, Eb, F, G and a total weight of 5,180 kg were added to the existing Bernhard bell from 1914. During the Second World War, the three new bells from 1922 were confiscated. Only the Bernhard bell could be kept again. In 1950, a completely new chime consisting of four bells (tone sequence B, D flat, Eb, Ges) and a weight of 7,000 kg was purchased, cast in the Otto bell foundry in Saarlouis . (Note: If the bells were really cast in 1950, they cannot be from the Saarlouis bell foundry, because it was only founded in 1953!)

Next to the church there is a wayside cross from 1806, the so-called “Armen-Seelen-Kreuz”, which was moved from its original location in Wintringer Strasse around 1910 to the cemetery and around 1930 to its present location.

organ

The church received the first organ in 1914. The instrument with 22 registers was built by Gebr. Späth Orgelbau ( Mengen ). In 1970 a new organ was inaugurated because the Späth organ was defective due to the effects of the Second World War and could no longer be returned to its original condition after a previous restoration in the 1950s.

For the construction of the organ from 1970, the company EF Walcker & Cie. ( Ludwigsburg ) responsible. The cone chest instrument placed on a gallery has 33 (34) registers, divided into 3 manuals and pedal . The playing and stop action is electric. The disposition is as follows:
