The Catholic town parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Lindenberg im Allgäu in the Bavarian district of Lindau (Bodensee) is a neo-Baroque building from the early 20th century. The listed church is also known as the Westallgäu Cathedral .

history

The population growth in the city of Lindenberg at the end of the 19th century meant that several institutions - including the church - became too small. During this time, the merchant Christian Mayer suggested the establishment of a church association, which was founded in 1885 under Pastor Franz Eberle. The financial basis for a new church was laid through regular contributions and targeted collections. The location of the church was discussed from 1896, and it was finally decided to build the church at Goethestrasse 3. The location of the church was determined by an expert report by the regional president and the episcopal ordinariate in Augsburg .

The first sketch plans for the new church were available as early as 1901. The neo-baroque church building by the Munich architect Franz Rank was carried out ; the builder was Josef Bilger from Lindenberg. The building was managed by the architect Brachinger. The foundation stone was laid by the parish priest Johannes Egger on the holiday of the birth of Mary in 1912 . The completed church building was inaugurated on May 14, 1914 by Bishop Maximilian von Lingg . The construction costs for the new church amounted to around 600,000 marks.

The parish of St. Petrus and Paulus and the parishes of Scheidegg and Scheffau have formed the Pfänderrücken parish community in the dean's office in Lindau ( Diocese of Augsburg ) since September 1st, 2016 .

Building description

The front of the parish church is formed by both towers with a convex central part. A barrel-vaulted gallery with pillar colonnades runs around the church . The hall covered with a pent roof shows a relief with Peter as a fisherman on the barrel vault in the entrance . To the right and left, the hall opens into circular buildings with a tent roof . The middle section between the columns with its eight windows is structured by colossal pilasters with Ionic capitals . In the crowning volute gable there is a detached, white relief depicting a monstrance and two angels kneeling on the side . The basement of the two church towers has bulging wall surfaces and is structured with colossal pilasters. The mezzanine floor, which rises above it, contains cornered colossal pilasters and cranked entablature. The eight windows per church tower stand out with their white walls from the gray plaster. There is a balcony at the upper window on both tower fronts. The towers are closed with a French hood . The hoods, which run out in volutes, have a clock face and are crowned with a Pope's cross at the top.

The walls of the aisles are structured by pillars, the wall elements of which are curved in a convex manner. Access to the church is through a portal on the south and north sides. The transition to the wall of the tall nave with ox eyes takes place via a pent roof on the side aisles. The nave itself is a gable roof covered and has small dormers . Above the choir , the drum dome rises on an octagonal floor plan, which is structured with pilasters . A figure of the Apostle Peter is attached to the onion dome of the dome . The side aisles end on both sides at the height of the choir in a round extension with smaller drum domes. The outer shape of the sacristy resembles a gallery and surrounds the choir, thus connecting the two side extensions. It contains large segmental arched windows and is covered with a monopitch roof.

The outer length of the church building without the porches is 74.15 m, the inner length 66.8 m. The building has an outer width of 28.6 m and a ridge height of 19.25 m. The tower height is 55 m, the height of the dome without the figure 38 m. The church has 1200 seats and 1800 standing places.

Furnishing

Central nave with high altar

The high altar consists of a structure with two flanking columns with Ionic capitals. These border the altar sheet with the depiction of Christ's resurrection , a work by Julius Exter from 1914. The tabernacle between the altarpiece and the altar sheet is decorated with the figure of a pelican . On the sides of the tabernacle there are reliefs with the four evangelist symbols . The figures of the church patron Peter on the right and Paul on the left rise above the reliefs . Both figures were made by the Lang sel. Erben company in Oberammergau . The columns, which are surrounded by flowers, carry the entablature with angels making music. The altar structure is crowned by a representation of a protective mantle Madonna . In the two blind arcades next to the high altar there are figures of Salvator Mundi (left) and Our Lady (right).

The templates for the glass windows of the two side aisles were made by Julius Exter in 1913. The windows show depictions of the birth of Christ and the crucifixion of Christ . They form, so to speak, the altar structure of the side altars, which are based on classicist shapes and are dedicated to Mary and Joseph . Josef Eggle from Aulendorf created both side altars and adapted their structure to the high altar. The figures of St. Mary and St. Joseph were created in 1961 by the sculptor Zwinck.

pulpit

The sound cover of the pulpit shows depictions of the church fathers in oval medallions . In between there are putti holding liturgical implements. The sound cover is crowned with a figure of Christ as a sower. The pulpit has coffered fields that are decorated with rosettes and fruit garlands.

The crucifix opposite the pulpit on the third pillar of the nave was made by Paul Keck and commemorates the mission in 1952 and 1985. The figures of the apostles were created by the sculptor Balthasar Krinner from Wangen in 1684 and were taken from the former baroque church of St. Martin Cheeks transferred. The figures were painted in 1765/1766 for 100 florins by the painter Andreas König from Wangen.

A life-size figure of Ecce Homo is placed on the right-hand choir arch pillar. The figure with a size of 163 cm comes from the Aurelius Church and wears a purple cloak and reeds that were added later . The figure was made from linden wood and is attributed to the sculptor Christoph Daniel Schenck . Stations of the Cross , designed as framed wooden reliefs, are located in the concave bulges of the aisles. These come from Heinz Schiestl from Würzburg and were completed in 1926. The frames of the reliefs resemble portal architecture.

Although the church was to be painted from the beginning, the ceiling painting in the nave and some other paintings could only be carried out in 1961. The paintings are by the regional artist Paul Keck .

The organ of the parish church is on the gallery above the entrance portal. It is the work of the master organ builder Josef Zeilhuber sen. from old towns . The instrument with electro-pneumatic cone store , built in 1934, received an 87% tin prospectus on an area of ​​70 to 80 m 2 . It has 53  registers distributed over three manuals and pedal . In 1959 it was expanded to include a 32 ′ tuba in the pedal. The disposition is as follows:

Bells

A total of seven bronze bells are housed in both church towers. The bells sound in the tone sequence g ° -a ° -c'-d'-e'-g'-a '. They were cast in the bell foundry Petit & Edelbrock in Gescher . The bells were all cast in 1948; Bell I, however, jumped in 1996 and was replaced by a new cast from Petit & Edelbrock. All bells together weigh 18 tons.
