Stars on 45 - Gold Record

Stars on 45 are a Dutch music project in the early 1980s with pop - medleys had great success.

history

When the Dutch producer Jaap Eggermont came across a bootleg with mixed-together Beatles songs and other oldies in 1980 , he had the idea of creating a similar, official record. For copyright reasons, however, he did not resort to the originals and mixed them, but instead had the individual hit pieces by Dutch studio musicians sing and play as true to the original as possible. This mixture was applied on a uniform, dance performance Discobeat brought and with the intro The stars on 45 keep on turning in your mind ... provided. The whole project was called "Stars on 45", where 45 stands for the record single that rotates at 45 revolutions per minute. The original version of the medley originally lasted just under 16 minutes, but it was repeatedly divided and compiled for different formats.

Shortly before the single was released in December 1980, John Lennon was murdered, which rekindled interest in the music of the Beatles and contributed to the fact that the record became a million seller worldwide from March 1981 . As the second Dutch formation in music history, they reached number 1 in the USA ; their predecessors were Shocking Blue , whose number one hit Venus was also part of the first music mix.

But the idea carried beyond this first hit and with a second episode of ABBA hits Eggermont and his singers were able to build on their success. Further mixes with titles by Stevie Wonder and the Rolling Stones followed, and two albums were released. However, the success began to decrease noticeably. In 1983 there was another follow-up with hits by the Andrews Sisters under the name The Star Sisters with three singers, who then continued as an independent band. In 1987 a Frank Sinatra Medley entered the charts for the last time.

Then Eggermont triggered a whole series of medleys, including Hooked on Classics , Hooked on Big Bands and Hooked on Swing , mid-1980s, the hit mixes with hits of the year and the end of the 1980s, the medley of Jive Bunny & The Master Mixers from England, which had several number one hits with the originals mixed together.

The singers

Bas Muys, Okkie Huysdens, Hans Vermeulen , Albert West , Arnie Treffers, Jody Pijper, Peter Vermeij, Tony Sherman.

The Star Sisters: Patricia Paay , Yvonne Paay , Sylvana van Veen (later replaced by Ingrid Ferdinandus)
