Stefan Schwerdtfeger (* 1928 in Stettin ; † November 19, 2018 ) was a German architect , sculptor , painter and university lecturer .

Life

He spent his school days in Stettin from 1934 to 1943. In 1944 he was conscripted as an anti-aircraft helper . After he was released from British captivity to the north ( East Friesland ) in 1945, he did an apprenticeship as a carpenter there before he made up his Abitur at the grammar school in Alfeld / Leine in 1948. He then studied architecture at the Technical University of Hanover with a focus on painting and graphics with Kurt Sohns . After his diploma and a subsequent assistantship at the chair for spatial art at the TH Hannover, he took over the position of design architect at the building department of the city of Hannover in 1958. Since 1959 he also stayed regularly in Skagen (Denmark).

1963 switched to the Werkkunstschule Hannover as a lecturer for interior design and at the same time founded his own architectural office. In addition, he worked as a visual artist and continues to exhibit regularly at home and abroad. His works are in collections and museums. Commissioned work for art in public spaces complement the free artistic activity. In 1971 he was appointed full professor to the chair for modeling and experimental design at the Technical University of Hanover in the architecture department.

Work stays in Denmark, Holland, Yugoslavia and Venice served the artistic examination of the special peculiarities and characteristics of places. From 1981 to 2009 he had a permanent studio in Skagen. After his retirement in 1993 he devoted himself increasingly and exclusively to his work as a painter and sculptor and has since worked in his studio in Walshausen near Hildesheim.

In Hanover, he has, among other things, various underground stations in public space, the facade of the Kaufhof on Ernst-August-Platz , the memorial for the synagogue in the Rote Reihe, at the entrance to the airport the red steel spiral "up and away" and designed the Leibniz monument at the Operndreieck , Georgstrasse. His installation made of steel plates, “Book of lost letters” (In the beginning was the word), is located in the Kunsthalle Schweinfurt.

Stefan Schwerdtfeger's work was included in the " Lower Saxony artist database and estate archive ".
