Local history

Stein used to belong to the Jülich office of Millen. In 1370 the Knight von Stein made his castle house of the same name, later also called Haus Burg, the open house of the Duke of Jülich. Johann seems to have been a feudal man for the von Heinsberg family.

Stein had a total of 144 inhabitants in 1828 and, together with Havert , Isenbruch and Schalbruch, formed the municipality of Havert, which belonged to the Selfkant district.

From April 23, 1949 to July 31, 1963, the Selfkant and thus also the Havert municipality was under Dutch contract administration. The repatriation took place on August 1, 1963 after payment of 280 million D-Marks .

With the law on the reorganization of municipalities in the Selfkantkreis Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg of June 24, 1969, the following change of area came into force on July 1, 1969.

§ 1 (1) The municipalities of Havert , Hillensberg , Höngen , Millen , Süsterseel , Tüddern , Wehr (Selfkant office) and the Saeffelen municipality (Waldfeucht office) will be merged to form a new municipal municipality. The community is given the name Selfkant.

§ 1 (2) The Office Selfkant is dissolved. The legal successor is the municipality of Selfkant.

Church history

Stein owns the Lady Chapel, which was built in 1857 and renovated in 1986. The parish of St. Gertrud Havert was with Isenbruch, Lind, Schalbruch and stone an independent parish . The majority of the population consists of Catholics .

The first documentary mention of the Church of St. Gertrud in Havert is known from the year 1118, when Gerhard von Wassenberg , who had the right of patronage , transferred it to the Georgsstift.

In the course of the parish reforms in the Diocese of Aachen, the formerly independent Catholic parish of St. Gertrud Havert was incorporated into the Community of Parishes (GdG) St. Servatius Selfkant .

politics

According to § 3 (1) of the main statute of the Selfkant municipality, the municipality is divided into localities. Stein and Havert form a locality and, according to § 3 (2), is represented by a local mayor in the community council. Heinz-Josef Dahlmanns is the mayor of Havert. (Stand 2013)
