Edward Jeroen Sturing (born June 13, 1963 in Apeldoorn , the Netherlands ) is a Dutch football coach and former professional player who was active at De Graafschap in Doetinchem and SBV Vitesse in Arnhem . He was used three times in the national team.

Career

society

Sturing played in his youth with the Go Ahead Eagles in Deventer and began his professional career in the 1982/83 season with De Graafschap in the Eerste Divisie . The right defender won a regular place in the team in the following season. He played for the Grafschaftern for five years before moving from Doetinchem to league rivals SBV Vitesse in Arnhem. From the start he was part of the first team of coach Bert Jacobs , who two years later as champion of the second division season 1988/89 achieved promotion to the Eredivisie thanks to goals from top scorer John van den Brom .

In his first season in the top division Sturing was awarded the Gouden Schoen , the "Golden Shoe" for the best player in the honor division. With him Vitesse was not only able to keep the class, but also qualified for an international competition for the first time with fourth place. The Arnhem team's most successful period in the 1990s is linked to the names Sturing, van den Brom, Theo Bos , Martin Laamers , Bart Latuheru - all except Bos made it to the national team during this time - and the young Phillip Cocu . In Sturing's nine years with Vitesse in the Eredivisie, the club finished a season worse than fifth. The team from Niederrhein qualified for the UEFA Cup five times in total during this time - first with coach Jacobs, then under Herbert Neumann and finally with technical director Leo Beenhakker and coach Henk ten Cate . In 1997 Sturing was voted "Vitesse Player of the Season". In Sturing's last season 1997/98, the club achieved the best league placement in the club's history with a third place behind Ajax Amsterdam and PSV Eindhoven ; the Greek Nikos Machlas , the successor to Roy Makaay who moved to Spain , scored 34 league goals this season.

In his last game for Vitesse, a 2-1 home win on May 3, 1998 against Feyenoord , Edward Sturing was substituted in the 65th minute by Jochem van der Hoeven . Sturing thus ended his active career after more than 200 Eredivisie games for Vitesse.

National team

Sturing came on December 20, 1989 against Brazil under bond coach Thijs Libregts for his first international match. The occasion of the friendly match was the 100th anniversary of the KNVB . Since many regular players like Ruud Gullit , Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard canceled, bond coach Thijs Libregts called some players into the squad who had no international experience. Sturing made his debut in the starting line-up, as did his Arnhem club mate Bart Latuheru and Frank Berghuis from Volendam ; Martin Laamers , who formed the right flank with Sturing and Latuheru at Vitesse, also made his first appearance in the Oranje jersey after the break . In contrast to the Dutch, Brazil had the best team in De Kuip . Nevertheless, the Elftal was able to keep the game open for a long time under the direction of the German referee Werner Föckler ; in the 55th minute, however , Careca scored the goal for the Brazilians' 1-0 victory.

While it remained for the wingers Berghuis and Latuheru the only use in the senior team, Sturing was part of the squad again in the next friendly on February 21, 1990. In the goalless draw against Italy , again in Rotterdam, he came on after the half-time break for Rijkaard. The defender was also allowed to fly to Kiev for the following match and play another 90 minutes in the 2-1 defeat against the Soviet Union . After the change from interim coach Nol de Ruiter to Leo Beenhakker , Sturing was not considered for the other preparatory games or for the World Cup squad for Italy; his international career ended after three missions.

Trainer

As a player, Sturing had already trained Vitesse's C1 youth and later trained national players such as Stijn Schaars and Nicky Hofs . After his active career, he went seamlessly from player to assistant coach at the Arnhem team and continued to work in youth work. After just over a year, he and the second co -trainer Jan Jongbloed took over responsibility for the Eredivisie team for the first time in an interim coaching team for two months at the end of October 1999 after Herbert Neumann was released . After the engagement of Ronald Koeman , both stepped back into the second tier. In December 2001 Koeman moved to AFC Ajax in Amsterdam. This time Sturing took sole responsibility for the team and at the end of the season led the team to fifth place in the table and to their ninth participation in the UEFA Cup. For the 2002/03 season, the club hired a new coach, Mike Snoei , who was released in March 2003. Sturing was responsible for the team for the third time, but was now allowed to remain in this position, although only 14th place was achieved at the end of the season. He was then head coach of Vitesse for three seasons and led the team back to the safe midfield of the Eredivisie after rank 16 in the 2003/04 season.

In 2006 he became head of the youth department at PSV in Eindhoven . A year later, the club was awarded the prize for the best club youth work in the Netherlands. Sturing stayed with PSV until 2008 before going back to Vitesse as co-trainer for Hans Westerhof for the 2008/09 season . When four days after Westerhof's dismissal, Sturing's former teammate Theo Bos was signed as head coach, he resigned and worked as a scout and game analyst until the end of the season. The reason was that the two former players had been in an argument since Sturing Bos had not wanted to be an assistant during his time as head coach.

At the beginning of the 2009/10 season, FC Volendam , relegated from the Eredivisie, signed Sturing on loan as head coach. From this post he resigned in February 2010; the team's performance in the Eerste Divisie was far below expectations with a 14th place in the table up to this point.
