Stuttgarter Stäffele
Map with all coordinates: The Stuttgarter Stäffele are probably more than 500 staircases in the Baden-Württemberg state capital Stuttgart . Current estimates speak of 500–600 stairways throughout the city.
Its origins go back to a time when the slopes around Stuttgart were cultivated by winegrowers . When Stuttgart expanded from the middle of the 19th century and the slopes were increasingly urbanized, the old vineyards gave way to footpaths and stairs to the new higher-lying residential areas. The cross connections between the streets often feature ornate architecture.
The term Stäffele is derived from the word “Staffel”, which is common in the southern German language area. According to Duden , this is understood to mean “stairs”, also the “landing of a staircase”. In the Swabian dialect it became “Stäffele”. The term is on the one hand diminutive , on the other hand a belittling, which is why it is to be understood as a pet form, such as the quarter (0.25 liter of wine).
Well-known Stäffele are the Eugenstaffel (which is only known colloquially, it is actually the Eugenstraße), the Oscar-Heiler -staffel and the Willy-Reichert -staffel zur Karlshöhe , the singer's relay, the Georg-Elser -staffel, the sinner relay, the pigeon relay, the Emil Molt relay and the Buchenhof relay .
The many Stäffele have given the residents of Stuttgart the local name Stäffelesrutscher . In addition, most of the Stäffele are often not marked with official street signs, as they are often a continuation of existing streets (e.g. Eugenstrasse) or unnamed or Stäffele without direct access to the property.
The Stuttgart dialect poet and dialect researcher Friedrich E. Vogt (1905–1995) was also given a separate season. He wrote a song about the "steep Stuttgart Stäffele". It was sung by Willy Reichert and Oscar Müller, among others .
Since the 1980s, various city walks, the so-called "Stäffelestouren", have been offered on the Stäffele. In addition to the classic city tours, these are rather small hikes and are offered by the city of Stuttgart as well as by numerous independent city guides . Stäffele in Stuttgart are not only used for getting around, citizens and guests also like to use them as viewing and meeting points. Literature and sporting events are increasingly becoming fashionable on the staircases, as are workouts and dating .
