The synagogue of Mackenheim , a French commune in the Bas-Rhin department in the historic Alsace region , was built in 1866/67. The building is at 2, rue de la Chapelle.

history

The Jewish community of Mackenheim already owned a synagogue that was built in the early 19th century. The old synagogue was too small for the larger community, which is why a new one was built in 1866/67.

The building was acquired in 1981 by the Mackenheim community and a public library was set up on the ground floor . A kindergarten is located on the upper floor, at the level of the former women's gallery .

portal

The still visible portal inscription from Genesis 28:17 reads: How awesome is this place. Here is nothing but God's house and here is the gate of heaven.

Geniza

In the geniza of the former synagogue in Mackenheim, which was found in 1981, the following items were found: a small prayer robe ( tallit ), a shofar and a pouch for the tefillin .
