The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D is a family comedy directed by Robert Rodriguez . According to his own testimony, he was inspired by a bedtime story he told his children.

The focus is on Max, a shy boy, the outsider in his class who is afraid of his parents getting divorced. The only escape from the real world is his colorful dreams. In them he travels with his imaginary friends Sharkboy and Lavagirl to the fictional planet Schleck (in the English original Drool ). There all his dreams come true.
