action
France in the 17th century. The people suffer from general poverty and the weak king. Little D'Artagnan from Gascony has to watch helplessly as the nefarious Febre kills his family - but he is severely cut in one eye, forcing Febre to retreat. Planchet , his father's best friend, took D'Artagnan into his home and trained him as a soldier over the years.
As adults, both go to Paris , where D'Artagnan, like his father once did , wants to join the infamous royal musketeers . But the king's bodyguard has been deposed and is living a bleak existence underground and in taverns, while their leader Treville is incarcerated in prison.
Meanwhile, the power-hungry Cardinal Richelieu has usurped control and filled key positions in the empire with his own soldiers, led by henchman Rochefort . And Febre is also one of his henchmen.
In the course of the plot, D'Artagnan can free Treville with the help of the loyal musketeers Athos , Porthos and Aramis , unite the bodyguards and win the favor of the queen and her lady-in-waiting, Francesca .
Meanwhile, Febre mutinies against Richelieu and pursues his own plans to abuse the Queen for a plot. He keeps her and Francesca prisoner in a heavily fortified castle , with whom D'Artagnan has since fallen in love. Richelieu asks D'Artagnan for help. D'Artagnan turns to the musketeers, who at first do not want to hear from him because he left them behind without explanation when he accompanied the queen and Francesca on a secret mission.
D'Artagnan goes to the castle alone; little by little his colleagues appear there, who followed him. You and Planchet storm the castle. Febre shoots Francesca and is then killed in a degendual by D'Artagnan .
The king honors the musketeers. In the end, D'Artagnan and Francesca go away together.
Comparison book - film
- The story of D'Artagnan and the three musketeers is one of the most widely read books in the world. The material has also been filmed countless times over the years, including a. with Gene Kelly , Michael York , Richard Chamberlain , Kiefer Sutherland , Charlie Sheen and Chris O'Donnell . In his adaptation, director Peter Hyams tried to gain new impulses from the story and thereby changed certain parts of the famous novel.
- The most important change is the introduction of the main villain Febre, played by Tim Roth . The character does not appear explicitly in the book. At most the mysterious Count von Rochefort from Dumas' novel could have served as his model.
- D'Artagnan's lover Constance , who came to a tragic end in the novel, was made into Francesca , who also survived the adventure.
- The leading role of Milady de Winter was completely left out, the long-established musketeers Athos , Porthos and Aramis degenerated into extras.
