Wilhelm Theodor Johann Melior (born March 18, 1853 in Schotten ; † April 17, 1940 in Göttingen ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

origin

He was the son of Karl Melior and his wife Elise, née Demmer. His father was the Grand Ducal Hessian Privy Senior Consistorial Councilor and Privy Councilor .

Military career

After graduating from high school, Melior joined the 3rd Infantry Regiment of the Grand Ducal Hessian Army as a volunteer on July 17, 1870, and in the same year took part in the siege of Metz during the war against France . He became a member of Corps Hassia Darmstadt in the winter semester of 1869/70 .

In 1871 he was appointed Portepeefähnrich and entered Prussian service the following year . On March 9, 1872 he was promoted to Second Lieutenant and served from June 1, 1874 to September 30, 1878 as a battalion adjutant. From April 1, 1879, Melior was adjutant of the Darmstadt II Landwehr district and was transferred to the 6th Brandenburg Infantry Regiment No. 52 on August 16, 1881 while being promoted to Prime Lieutenant . From July 14, 1882 to October 15, 1886, he was employed as a regimental adjutant, and was then assigned to the 14th Infantry Brigade in Halberstadt under position à la suite as adjutant . Left in this command on April 14, 1887 transferred to the Infantry Regiment "von Manstein" (Schleswigsches) No. 84 and promoted to captain on May 14, 1887 , Melior came on April 17, 1888 as a company commander in the 1st Upper Rhine region Infantry Regiment No. 97 to Saarburg . Then in mid-May 1892 he was transferred to the fusilier regiment "Prince Heinrich of Prussia" (Brandenburg) No. 35 in Brandenburg . His promotion to major on September 12, 1894 was followed on April 4, 1896 by being appointed battalion commander . On March 23, 1901, while being promoted to lieutenant colonel , Melior joined the staff of the infantry regiment “Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia” (2nd Magdeburgisches) No. 27 in Halberstadt. As a colonel he was from April 26, 1903 to September 10, 1907 in command of the infantry regiment "von Alvensleben" (6th Brandenburgisches) No. 52 in Crossen . This was followed by his promotion to major general, his appointment as commander of the 81st Infantry Brigade in Lübeck . From this post Melior was delivered on 21 March 1910 and subsequently awarded the character as a lieutenant general with board for disposition made.

He stayed in the Free and Hanseatic City of Lübeck.

With the outbreak of the First World War he was reactivated and on August 2, 1914 appointed commander of the 33rd mixed replacement brigade. After the dissolution of this brigade on July 9, 1915, Melior was given command of a division named after him on June 29, 1916 , which on November 25, 1916 was finally budgeted as the 225th Infantry Division . With the large association Melior took part in the fighting on the Eastern Front . On November 20, 1916, he was awarded the patent for his rank. End of the year was Melior command and was on May 14, 1917 Commander of on the Eastern Front in position battles lying 92nd Infantry Division . After the ceasefire and the subsequent armistice had occurred on this section of the front in December 1917, Melior took part in the fighting in support of Ukraine from mid-February 1918, which culminated in the occupation of the country from June 22nd.

After the end of the war , Melior led his division back home until March 1919 and was dismissed on May 26, 1919 after the demobilization . With effect from that day on October 28, 1919, he was still given the character of General of the Infantry.

The on bladder cancer sick Melior died of uremia .

He was married to Natalie, born von Oppermann († 1938). During the war, he moved from Lübeck to Göttingen on January 15, 1918 .
