Karl Friedrich Theodor Freiherr von Sell (born June 20, 1817 in Wittlich , † November 4, 1891 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Theodor came from the noble family von Sell . He was a son of the Prussian major general Friedrich Ludwig von Sell (1746-1850) and his second wife Charlotte, née von Frobel (1795-1859).

Military career

After attending grammar schools in Neisse , Glatz and Brieg , Sell joined the 3rd Rifle Division of the Prussian Army as a rifle on October 6, 1834 . At the beginning of March 1836 he was promoted to secondary lieutenant , worked for three months in the 4th Rifle Division in 1840 and completed the general war school from October 1841 to July 1844 for further training . On April 7, 1846 Sell was appointed adjutant and rose to prime lieutenant in late November 1848 . During the campaign against Denmark he took part in the battles at Alminde , Veile , Viuf and Aarhus and received the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords , for his work .

Sell ​​was transferred as a captain to the 8th Jäger Battalion in Wetzlar on July 12, 1852 , but returned to Düsseldorf in mid-March of the following year with the appointment of company commander in the 7th Jäger Battalion . This was followed as a major on July 1, 1860 , when he was transferred to Stolp in the 8th Pomeranian Infantry Regiment No. 61 created in the course of the army expansion . From October 7, 1862 to May 8, 1865 he was commander of the 1st battalion in Conitz . Then Sell was appointed commander of the Westphalian Jäger Battalion No. 7 and promoted to lieutenant colonel in mid-June 1865 . At the Elbarmee he led the battalion in the war against Austria in the battles near Münchengrätz and Königgrätz in 1866 and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III. On October 30, 1866 Sell was appointed commander of the Infantry Regiment No. 81 stationed in Mainz and promoted to colonel on December 31, 1866 in this position . During the war against France in 1870/71 his association led in front of Metz , at Noisseville , Chieulles , Rupigny, Tapes, Thionville and in the sieges of Mézières and Péronne .
