history
Thomaston was the most important settlement that goes back to the Museongus patent, later Waldo patent . A first trading house for trading with the Indians was built as early as 1630 on the east bank of the St. George River. To attract more settlers, two heavily fortified log houses were built between 1719 and 1720 to protect the new settlers. At the same time, the old trading house was further fortified and equipped with a crew of 20 men. The Indians considered this to be an unjustified interference and protested. The English then declared that the area had been sold to William Phips and showed a document signed by Madockawando and Sheepscot John. The Indians denied the legality, but could not prevail and attacked the young settlement. The government sent 45 men with cannons to support the settlers. In 1722 the Indians attacked the settlement, burned the sawmill, set fire to a sloop in the harbor and destroyed all the houses. However, they were unable to take the garrison's blockhouses and they withdrew. A later siege also failed. Later attacks also failed, but the settlement suffered from the attacks by the Indians.
Thomaston was finally organized as a town on March 20, 1777, previously the area was known as St. Georges Plantation and at that time still included the areas of Rockland and South Thomaston, which were organized as independent towns in 1848. Thomaston was named after General John Thomas .
In 1849 land was given to East Thomaston, which is now part of Rockland, and in 1852 areas were taken over by Rockland. Parts of Chushing were taken over in 1891 and 1909.
Henry Knox , the first US Secretary of War, lived in Thomaston with his family. He built his Montpelier estate on the site of the Thomaston trading house. Knox is the namesake of Knox County. Today, a replica of the property is located at the intersection of US Highway 1 and Maine State Route 131.
Thomaston was linked to Rockland and Camden by the former Rockland, Thomaston and Camden Street Railway . In 1931 operations were stopped.
