He played two seasons for Fenerbahçe Istanbul and was involved in some important successes in the club's history during this time. He was part of the Fenerbahçe team that won the Turkish championship and the Turkish Cup for the second time in the club's history in the 1973/74 season , winning the Turkish double .

Player career

society

The beginnings of Çuğ's career are incompletely documented. According to the first documented source, he played for the Turkish amateur club Karabükspor in the mid-1960s and moved to the first division club Ankara Demirspor in the 1967 summer transfer period for a transfer fee of 15,000 Turkish lira . Other sources suggest that he started his football career in Kayseri . At Demirspor he quickly won a regular place and ended his first season with 26 league and four cup appearances. Çuğ played for the capital city until the summer of 1973 and kept his regular place until the last season. During this time he made it to the Turkish U-18 and then the U-21 international. In the summer of 1972 he rose with Demirspor in the Türkiye 2. Futbol Ligi , the then two Turkish leagues, and played in this league for a year.

At the beginning of the 1972 summer transfer period, Çuğ and Reşit Kaynak were "kidnapped" by league rivals Adanaspor by some of Istanbul's club officials from Fenerbahçe . This common practice in Turkish football at the time happened with the consent of the players and had the purpose of preventing the player from being committed by competing clubs. After Çuğ reached an agreement with Fenerbahçe, the clubs began to negotiate among themselves. Both clubs could not come to an agreement at first and so Demirspor agreed to the transfer offer from league rivals Bursaspor for 450.00 Turkish lira and additionally goalkeeper Mithat Önal . Although Çuğ had signed a preliminary contract with Bursaspor, Fenerbahçe got back into the transfer negotiations about a week later and signed Çuğ for a transfer fee of 325,000 liras and two young players. A few days later, Fenerbahçe increased the transfer fee to 400,000 lira and two young players. At his new club, Çuğ was regularly used by the Brazilian coach Valdir Pereira and was the defender of his team with the most appearances with 33 competitive appearances. His club finished the season behind arch rivals Galatasaray Istanbul as runner-up, but was able to close the season with two titles with victories in the President's Cup and the Prime Minister's Cup . In the 1973/74 season he started with his team by winning the TSYD Istanbul Cup , which was played pre-seasonally . At the end of the season he and his team won the Turkish championship and also the Turkish Cup . As a result, Çuğ was part of the Fenerbahçes squad that won the second Turkish double in the club's history. Çuğ played 37 competitive games this season.

After Çuğ had participated in the preparatory camp for the 1974/75 season, he moved to league rivals Adanaspor for a transfer fee of 400,000 lira before the start of the season . At this club, he was one of the most important performers from the start and in his nine years of service he made 30 league games almost every season. Already in his first two seasons he achieved 4th place in the table with his team and thus the best first division placement in the club's history. After he achieved relegation in the 1976/77 season with Adanaspor only on the last day of the game, he finished the 1977/78 season with his team again in fourth place and thus repeated the best first division placement to date. With this placement, his team also qualified for the UEFA Cup . In the 1980/81 season , his club became the surprise team of the season and played for the championship for a long time, but fell from the top of the table towards the end of the season and ended the season as runner-up. This achieved the best first division placement in the club's history. In this 1982/83 season Çuğ started with three league appearances and then did not play any more until the winter break. As a result, he thought about ending his career at the end of 1982 and also tried to organize a farewell game. At the end of the season he continued his career and moved to the Istanbul second division Galata SK . For this club he played for a season. Although he started the 1984/85 season at Galata, he moved in December 1984 to his previous club, Adanaspor, which had since been relegated to the 2nd Lig. Here he ended his career in the summer of 1985.

National team

Çuğs national team career began in March 1970 with a use for the Turkish U-18 national team.

In the same year he also made his debut for the Turkish U-21 national team . On some of these missions, Çuğ was well over 21 years old.

In 1973 he was nominated for the first time and for the squad of the Turkish national team as part of a qualifying game of the 1974 World Cup against the Swiss national team by national coach Coşkun Özarı and completed his only senior international match in this game.

In total, he completed one U-18, seven U-21 and one A international match.

Coaching career

For the 1987/88 season Çuğ was hired as an assistant coach at his former club Fenerbahçe Istanbul and assisted Yılmaz Yücetürk , who worked as head coach, together with Ali Fuat Demircioğlu . After he announced his resignation after the 4-0 home defeat against Eskişehirspor , Çuğ Fenerbahçe also left. After his departure from Fenerbahçe Çuğ took over the Istanbul third division club Anadolu Hisari İdman Yurdu as head coach.

For the 1990/91 season he took over the post of assistant coach and assisted Erdem Tuğal with the new first division club Bakırköyspor . After a season at Bakırköyspor Çuğ Tuğal followed to league rivals and the then financially well-positioned Malatyaspor .

After his assistant coaching activity at Malatyaspor, Çuğ began to work as head coach and supervised a. a. the third division clubs Sivasspor , Edremit Belediyespor , Elazığspor , Beykozspor and Maltepespor .

In 1998 he worked for Fenerbahçe Istanbul as a scout and observed for the club a. a. the Brazilian youngster Dodô . In the same year he took over the Istanbul amateur club Yıldırım Bosnaspor in September and coached it until January 1999.

After Yıldırım Bosnaspor he worked again as head coach and was active in this function at various clubs of the lower Turkish professional leagues and also at some amateur clubs. At longer intervals he also worked as a junior coach for Fenerbahçe Istanbul.
