The 10th stage of the 2011 Tour de France on July 12, led after the first day of rest 158 kilometers from Aurillac to Carmaux . On the stage there was a sprint classification and two mountain classifications each in the 3rd and 4th category. 178 of the 198 registered drivers were still at the start.

Race course

After about ten kilometers, a six-person breakaway group formed from Rémy Di Gregorio , Sébastien Minard , Arthur Vichot , Julien El-Farès , Marco Marcato and Anthony Delaplace . At this point there was another fall in the field, but this had no consequences. Vichot won the intermediate sprint, while Mark Cavendish prevailed in the field . At 51.6 km / h, the first hour of the race was the fastest of this Tour de France to date, with the outliers gaining a maximum advantage of four minutes. The teams HTC-Highroad and Lampre did not allow more . The race then slowed down a little.

Marcato won the first and the two following mountain classifications and at the end of the stage was also recognized as the most combative driver. Before the last mountain classification, the group's lead shrank to less than a minute when HTC did the lead work alone. The leading group split into two groups when Minard, Vichot and Marcato pulled out a lead over their three companions, who were then caught by the field. Shortly afterwards, Marcato tried to drive on alone, but like his two other companions, he was caught up before the summit, which Thomas Voeckler drove over first after Tony Gallopin had increased the pace again, causing some sprinters to fall behind.

A group of five formed, which in addition to these two also included Philippe Gilbert , Tony Martin and Dries Devenyns . Gallopin fell back again and Gilbert tried to go it alone, but like his companions he was caught again by the field a few kilometers from the finish, which only consisted of around 60 drivers. André Greipel prevailed against Cavendish in the final sprint and won his first Tour de France stage.
