The 1st stage of the Tour de France 2014 took place on July 5, 2014 and led from Leeds over 190.5 km to Harrogate . During the course of the stage there was an intermediate sprint and two mountain classifications in the third and one in the fourth category. So the first stage counted as a flat stage, all 198 registered drivers started.
Race course
After 17.5 neutralized kilometers from Leeds to Harewood House came peloton again to a stop where the peloton to the grandson of Queen, Harry and William , and William's wife Kate met that cut the start ribbon after previously the squadron Red Arrows , the Zone and the national anthems of Great Britain and France played. The field then started again through Leeds City Park. As soon as this was left, Christian Prudhomme opened the tour with his Départ flag.
Jens Voigt , Nicolas Edet and Benoît Jarrier attacked just seconds after kilometer 0 . This trio then formed the breakaway group of the day. The sprinter teams then took over the pace work in the field to control the backlog. This only increased slowly. If there were still 2:32 minutes 163.8 km from the finish, the lead increased by less than half a minute in the following 10 km.
The Cray was the first mountain classification (the fourth category) of the 101st tour. This was won in the sprint by Jarrier, who got a point. Shortly thereafter, the sprint classification of the day followed, before which Voigt launched an attack and won ahead of Edet and Jarrier. Voigt used the lead he had gained, pulled off his attack and successfully pulled away. In the field, Coquard won the sprint ahead of Greipel , Sagan and Cavendish . Kittel stayed out of the sprint, and Démare didn't sprint either.
Then the Buttertubs Pass was on the program, a mountain classification in the third category. On this mountain there were masses of spectators who narrowed the road and caused an accordion effect in the field. Voigt won the two points ahead of Edet. The field shortened its deficit on this increase, which had meanwhile grown to just over five minutes - in the refreshment zone - to 3:48 minutes. The field split in the process.
Voigt crossed the last mountain classification of the day, the Grinton Moor, again as the leader, but only with a narrow lead over Lars Ytting Bak , who led the main field over this crest. When Voigt was finally overtaken with almost 60 km from the finish, the field slowed down and most of the left-behind drivers were able to close the gap again, even though their deficit was a maximum of one and a half minutes. This group included Rodríguez , Pinot , Gadret , Horner and Riblon , among others . Then the field rolled calmly towards the target, without any attack.
A few kilometers from the finish line, the speed was increased by the Omega Pharma-Quick-Step sprinter train . About 1200 meters from the goal, Fabian attacked Cancellara , who was caught about 200 meters from the goal. 250 meters from the finish, Mark Cavendish and Simon Gerrans fell as a result of a collision and pulled several other riders with them in the fall. The riders positioned in front of them were not hindered by the fall. So Kittel, Sagan, Coquard and Navardauskas could sprint victory among themselves. In this sprint up an uphill stretch, Kittel had the upper hand over Sagan. Navardauskas sprinted to third place ahead of Coquard.
