Subject

In contrast to earlier works by the band, the focus in the band's lyrics was not on political or socially critical topics. The lyrics function primarily as a self-reflection for the musicians, especially singer Jesse Barnett . In several interviews, the singer said that he had struggled with various personal and mental problems over the past two years. He moved back to Los Angeles from Toronto in mid-2017 after their relationship broke up. The fact that he has problems getting close to people who do not have the same living conditions as him or the problem of maintaining relationships - which is what Barnett is about touring frequently - led at times to a status of personal emptiness. It picks up on the singer's emotions that have accompanied him in recent years, including fear , sadness , but also about forgiveness, letting go and self-reflection. The pieces available on the album The Sun, The Moon, The Truth: Penance of Self , The Inner Authority: Realization of Self and The Reach for Me: Forgiveness of Self represent a trilogy within the album that the three levels to be reached Barnett's inner journey.

There are also occasional socially critical texts such as the song Cave Canem , which deals with the actions of people and their effects on the environment and nature . When asked why the musicians decided, in times of Donald Trump's presidency and the global rise of nationalism , Barnett replied that there are currently too many hardcore bands who have discovered this topic for themselves. However, the singer sees a connection between the global political situation and his state of mind . For Barnett it was important to develop a personal album, because he realized that you have to be at peace with yourself first to be able to change the world. To strengthen this statement, he quoted a line from the song Lookin Out for # 1 by the American rock band Death by Stereo .

“I'm sure some people will wonder why it wasn't a political album in Trump's time. But you hear of so many bands from the hardcore and punk scene “Fuck Trump” right now, but I wanted to offer something different. It's not, of course, that I disagree with someone saying “Fuck Trump”. I think the whole world is more or less agreed on this thing. However, I have the feeling that for a social change it is extremely important to start with yourself. Death By Stereo put it in a nutshell: "Saving the world is great but I've got to save myself first". "

- Jesse Barnett across from the Stageload

“There is this great quote from DEATH BY STEREO: 'Saving the world is great, but I've got to save myself first.' In the past two years I've said a lot of things on stage that I meant, but I couldn't feel them. I almost felt like a poser because I was too busy with myself. That's why I put a lot of pressure on myself, because we have a political self-image, but I just didn't have anything useful to say about it. I got a few things wrong and had to talk to people about things that had been unsaid for too long. I have my own journey behind me and the person who returned from this journey, only then can I take care of things like politics again. "

- Barnett to FUZE Magazine

In the opener 3 Feet from Piece , a voice message from Barnett's mother can be heard at the beginning of the song. He justified this by saying that his mother was the person who helped him the most on his life path and the album was inspired by her.

Press reviews

Christian Heinemann from the German FUZE Magazine writes that compared to the EP Better Ash Than Dust released in 2016, the musicians are again concentrating on emotional and personal issues. In addition, according to Heinemann, the music is very varied. He describes songs like The Sun, the Moon, the Truth:, Penance of self as “doomy” and Cave Canem as “thrashy”. 56 remember Thrice ; The Reach for Me: Forgiveness of Self on Barnett's Trade Wind side project . The album shows which versatile band Stick to Your Guns has matured into. Dominik Winter from the German Metal Hammer describes the album as having few surprises despite the contrasts between “Bollo breakdowns and singalongs” and “ Refused or machine head phrasings”. Although the album come over smooth and in danger of quickly wear off, then winter is sure pieces like 56 or The Reach For Me: Forgiveness Of Self smoothly without problems on the radio or on stadium stages next Rise Against and 30 Seconds to Mars may exist . Manuel Berger from Laut.de calls the musical mood on True View quite aggressive. So, "the guitarists with interspersed melodies and disharmonies" just miss the metalcore . The reef breakers really come into their own thanks to the production, which the reviewer describes as tough. Drummer George Schmitz, on the other hand, already proves in the opener 3 Feet from Piece how one can add epic to a simple power chord passage. As the only downer, Berger describes the last song on the album, The Reach For Me: Forgiveness Of Self, which stylistically falls out of the ordinary and takes a lighter direction, which makes the piece interchangeable.

Connor Atkinson from the Canadian Exclaim! writes that True View is welcoming and responsive. The opener already shows the listener what the band stands for: honest lyrics, catchy melodies influenced by punk , and an accessible approach to West Coast Hardcore. While Barnett's open book method of his lyrical vulnerability in pieces like Doomed by You benefits the group's performance, this seems misplaced in other places and would be better off in Barnett's post-punk side project Trade Wind . All in all, says Atkinson, the band gave their fans a collection of good songs; then 56 radio friendly, while Cave Canem a love child from the best pieces of the Bands Ignite and terror could be.
