The Tsinghua University ( Chinese  清華大學  /  清华大学 , Pinyin Qinghua Daxue , W.-G. Ch'ing-hua Ta hsiieh ) is a university in Beijing , People's Republic of China , which is one of the most selective and prestigious universities in China. National and international rankings show Tsinghua University by far as the leading technical and scientific university in China - and together with Peking University as one of the two best universities in the country. Tsinghua University is also a member of the C9 League, the Chinese counterpart to the American Ivy League , which was established in 2009 and unites the nine most prestigious universities in China.

The university is located in the north-western Beijing district of Haidian and is directly adjacent to Peking University . The international spelling of the name Tsinghua, which is officially used by the university to this day, dates from the time before the introduction of pinyin. In conscious preservation of its own tradition, the university decided to keep the previous spelling even after the introduction of pinyin. With the motto self-discipline and social engagement , Tsinghua University is committed to academic excellence and the well-being of Chinese society.

history

Tsinghua University was established in Beijing in 1911 with compensation from the Chinese government for the Boxer Rebellion to the United States . Originally, Tsinghua was a preparatory school for Chinese students to be sent to the United States by the government to study, but in 1925 it was converted into a university. In 1937, at the beginning of the Anti-Japanese War , Tsinghua University was merged with Peking University and Nankai University and moved to Kunming . After the World War all three universities were moved back to Beijing and Tientsin. Part of the workforce resisted the relocation and moved to Hsinchu in Taiwan in 1956 , where it was called Tsing Hua National University ( Chinese  國立 清華大學  /  国立 清华大学 , Pinyin Guólì Qīnghuá Dàxué , Tongyong Pinyin Guólì Cinghuá Dàsyué , abbreviated: NTHU ) first founded a nuclear science institute. The two Tsinghua Universities are no longer linked, but each claim to be the true Tsinghua University.

In 1952, Tsinghua became a polytechnic as part of a national reform of the higher education system. In the course of the reforms of 1978, other subjects were also made possible, e.g. B. Management , Economics and Law . In 1999 another school for art and design was opened.

Tsinghua University currently has around 26,000 students (as of 2008), most of whom live in student apartments on campus. The campus itself houses the former imperial gardens.

Schools and faculties

Tsinghua has a total of 20 schools and 12 faculties , which in turn are divided into a total of 48 departments. Some of these schools are also divided into individual faculties. Overall, the Tsinghua is a cadre forge for Chinese party officials with a strong focus on engineering . Today the university has 2,600 teaching staff, 3,700 doctoral students and approximately 26,000 students. There are cooperation with 144 foreign universities. With its 15 laboratories, it is one of the leading research centers in China. It also hosts the renowned Schwarzman Scholars Program , one of the most selective scholarship programs in the world.

Rankings

Tsinghua University, together with Peking University, is regularly rated as one of the two best universities in the People's Republic of China in national and international rankings.

Tsinghua University was ranked 14th worldwide in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings from 2017.

In the QS World University Rankings from 2016, it was ranked 24th worldwide.
