The Metro Station Museum Island is under construction subway station in Berlin district of Mitte . It is part of the extension of the U5 subway line from Alexanderplatz to the Brandenburg Gate , the construction of which began in 2010 ( groundbreaking ). The station is due to open in mid-2021, six months after the start of operations on the U-5 extension.

A station with a central platform is being built at the eastern end of Unter den Linden , between the armory and the Berlin Palace . Part of the station will be located immediately south of the Schloßbrücke under the Spree Canal . The platform will be around 16 meters below the top of the road.

Access structures with a distribution level below the road surface will be erected at both ends. On the west side there will be entrances in front of the Kronprinzenpalais and east of the armory towards the Museum Island . On the east side of the station, two entrances will be created directly at the Humboldt Forum. Both access structures will be equipped with escalators , the east entrance will also have an elevator leading from the surface to the platform.

First, the two pits for later access structures are produced in the East in an open design and to the west in top-down method , each under the protection of diaphragm walls and an HDI-sole . As part of the eastern excavation pit is located in the Spree Canal, it has to be partially filled in during the construction period behind a cofferdam . The station area will only be built after the tunnel boring machine has passed and the two section tunnels have been built. In contrast to the other stations in the new construction section, this is carried out starting from the two construction pits by means of mining under the protection of ground freezing . The icing process was already used in the construction of the Brandenburger Tor underground station .

The platform space is formed from the vaults of the two route tunnels, which are partially to be broken open, and the space in between with a flat ceiling supported by two rows of columns. The design by Max Dudler was inspired by the famous Schinkel set for the opera Die Zauberflöte from 1816 and provides for an aquamarine-blue barrel vault with 6662 points of light above the tracks as its starry sky . The walls are clad with light natural stone based on the classicist architecture of the surrounding buildings, granite from the Fichtel Mountains is used for this. The back track walls are designed with large-format photographs by Stefan Müller, which show the surrounding buildings.

A defense chamber will be built at the western end of the station to protect the underpassing of the Spree and Spree Canal. All systems for operational equipment such as power supply, telecommunications systems and air conditioning are installed in the underground station building.

From mid-2010 to the end of 2011, extensive lines were relocated in what will later be the construction site.

Also in 2011 archaeological excavations were carried out in the area of ​​the later eastern access structure . The houses of the Schloss Freiheit from the 17th and 18th centuries were located here until 1894 , the foundations and cellars of which were partially preserved.

The first batch for the production of the shell was awarded by the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) at the end of January 2012. It includes the launch shaft for the tunnel boring machine, the tunnel in the shield drive area , the Unter den Linden and Museum Island stations and a track changing system. The order volume is around 190 million euros. For the shell of the Museum Island train station, 65 million euros are estimated.

The actual start of construction for the station was at the end of April 2012.

To freeze under the Spree Canal in the area of ​​what will later be the platform space, a total of 95 bores, each 105 meters long, were drilled by the end of November 2017. Lines for the cooling liquid - minus 37 ° C cold calcium chloride solution - were laid in these . Around 2000 measuring points monitored the icing process. About 60 days after the start of the icing process, the symbolic start of the eruption for the future platform area was celebrated on May 8, 2018. This tube was christened “Lavinia”, named after Lavinia Frey, Director of Culture at the Humboldt Forum. Three to four months were estimated for the construction of this central tube. Subsequently, the two tunnels in the station area, which had already been built during the shield driving of the main tunnels, were enlarged; for this, the segment rings installed there had to be demolished. This work - and with it the entire mining drive - was completed in March 2019. In mid-July 2019, the new inner shell of the two tunnel tubes was completed so that the icy ground could be thawed again.

The shell construction was completed in November 2019, and in early 2020 the tracks that were still interrupted in the station area were tied through. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on February 10, 2020 .

The progress of construction at Museumsinsel station will determine the construction period for the entire extension of the route. Due to delays in the construction of the underground station, it will not be able to open until the line is scheduled to go into operation in December 2020. The trains are expected to pass through the station without stopping by mid-2021.

The underground station is to be served by the U5 line; there will be transfer options to numerous BVG bus routes .
