European environmental foundation

The European Environmental Foundation (engl. European Environment Foundation ) is a foundation based in Basel (CH). It was founded in January 2011 by the Freiburg business developer Bernd Dallmann and the Kippenheim entrepreneur Rolf Hiller .

activities

Since 2012 the foundation has organized what it claims to be the only worldwide convention of international environmental prizes in Freiburg im Breisgau (D) as a "platform for an interdisciplinary , long-term and personal exchange between the visionaries of environmental policy : between the winners of the most prestigious international environmental prizes" and for the " To stimulate and sustainably promote dialogue between all disciplines of environmental policy ":

2012

The first of these meetings took place from March 9 to 12, 2012 in the run-up to the Rio + 20 summit in Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil ) under the motto On the Way to Rio +20 ("On the way to Rio +20") . 65 environmental award winners took part, including

• Nnimmo Bassey , Nigerian poet and environmentalist,
• Helen Caldicott , Australian nuclear opponent and peace activist,
• Rolf Disch , German solar architect,
• Monika Griefahn , co-founder of Greenpeace Germany ,
• René Ngongo , Congolese biologist and ecologist,
• Jeremy Rifkin , American economist and publicist

It ended with the adoption of a joint declaration called the Freiburg Call for Action (English, st. Analogously "Freiburg Call for Action"). In this, the participants called for rapid and concrete progress to limit global warming and to promote sustainable developments in emerging and developing countries . Governments, as “pioneers of change”, should drive social renewal; Among other things, one percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP), which was around 600 billion dollars at the time, was to be invested in the maintenance or restoration of natural resources.

2013

The second Freiburg environmental convention from March 14th to 17th, 2013 had the motto New Coalitions - To Address Limits to Growth ("New alliances - to be able to attach growth limits "). Here were among others:

2014

The third Freiburg environmental convention took place from April 10th to 13th, 2014. It was under the motto Fighting for Protection- with social media, boycotts / buycotts and laws ( fight for [environment] protection - with social media , boycotts / refusals to buy and laws ). Participants were four winners of the Right Livelihood Award , 80 environmental award winners , 60 young people and 30 scientists, including B .:

• Wolfgang E. Burhenne , German forester and world-famous conservationist and environmentalist,
• Connie Hedegaard , EU Commissioner ,
• Gunter Pauli , entrepreneur, designer and co-founder of The Blue Economy
• Paul Walker , American political scientist and activist against chemical weapons.

2015

The fourth Freiburg Environment Convention took place from March 12th to 15th, this time in the run-up to the 21st UN Climate Change Conference (COP 21) and the 11th meeting on the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 11) in November / December 2015 in Paris and under the patronage of Klaus Töpfer . He had the main topic Adaptation to Climate Change (engl., Dt. Adapting to climate change ) and was treated with a minute of silence at the Fukushima nuclear disaster as of 11 March 2011 together with the demand after the global immediate stop of operation and construction of all Nuclear power plants started.

Participants and lecturers were among others:

• Franz Daschner , German doctor and hygiene researcher ,
• Bianca Jagger , former supermodel , actress and human rights activist from Nicaragua ,
• Alice Kaudia, Minister of Environment of Kenya , founding member of the Kenya Professional Association of Women in Agriculture and Environment ,
• Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker , Co-President of the Club of Rome .

A declaration was adopted at this convention calling for a CO2 tax to be introduced in the same year; the proceeds of the final “Africa Evening” were donated to the educational project of the African Information Movement (AIM) in Ghana .

2016

Under the theme "Leadership for real sustainability " ( Governance for real sustainability ) took the fifth environmental convention with some 100 participants from 40 nations, including 70 environmental award winners, from 10 to 13 March 2016 again in Freiburg instead.

The invited Russian environmental winner Nadezda Kutepova , President of the NGO Planet of Hopes (dt. Planet of Hopes ) and 2011 winner of the Nuclear-Free Future Award could not come to the Congress after their escape from Russia to France due to its exit requirements; the Honduran human rights and environmental activist Berta Cáceres, who was murdered a few days earlier, was remembered by the Congress with a minute's silence.

The opening speeches were held by the American cameraman and film director Michael Wadleigh , founder of Homo sapiens Foundation ( Homo Sapiens Foundation ) and Rainer Grießhammer from the Institute for Applied Ecology Freiburg . In addition, the film Power to Change - The energy rebellion by documentary filmmaker Carl-A. Fechner its premiere as part of the congress .

2017

The 6th Freiburg Environmental Convention took place from March 9th to 12th, 2017; again around 100 participants from 40 countries were expected, including the Deputy Environment Minister of Bangladesh , Abdullah Al Islam Jakob , the Austrian activist Hildegard Breiner and the German actress Marie-Luise Marjan ( alias " Mutter Beimer "). The central topic was the political persecution of environmental activists worldwide, the Convention wanted to call on governments all over the world with a joint resolution to end such oppression. On the opening evening, German ex-Federal President Horst Köhler gave a public lecture on the subject of “Countering the narrative of decline”. On March 11, Felix Finkbeiner contributed to the “ Plant-for-the- Planet "and Tristram Stuart on" The cost of food waste ". The solar airplane - circumnavigator Bertrand Piccard transmitted a video message. A "Young Talents Day" ( "Day of young talents ") in the United World College Freiburg on March 11 discussed activists with pupils, students and young scientists.

2018

The 7th International Freiburg Environment Convention will take place on the subject of “ Ecological Footprint ” from March 5 to 18, 2018 under the patronage of Klaus Töpfer (CDU member of the Bundestag, former Director of the UN Environment Program ), again with a “Young Talents Day”. The focus is on public lectures by Jennifer Morgan ( Greenpeace International board member ), Mathis Wackernagel ("inventor" of the ecological footprint, President of the Global Footprint Network ) with Kirsten Lund-Jurgensen (Executive Vice President of Pfizer and Head of Pfizer Global Supply ) as well as a gala dinner ("Green Dinner") by and with the TV cook Sarah Wiener . Environmental scientist Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker , Co-President of the Club of Rome , will also speak at the opening .

The Board of Trustees of the European Environmental Foundation consists of fifteen people, including

• Peter W. Heller , former mayor of Freiburg, environmental scientist, founder of a foundation and company,

The chair is the German physicist and former head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) and President of the German Scholars Organization Eicke Weber .
