history

In the area around Velpke, which has been evangelical since the Reformation , Catholics settled again towards the end of the 19th century and found work in the Velpke quarries, including Italians and Poles. At that time the Catholics in Velpke belonged to the parish of St. Ludgeri in Helmstedt . From 1892 Catholic services were held in the nearby Oebisfelde , and from around 1905 Velpke belonged to the Herz Jesu parish in Oebisfelde.

In 1893 a Catholic men's association was founded in Velpke, to which the later Kolping family goes back. Since 1910, catholic services have been held at times in the Velpker Gasthaus Lindenhof, the celebrants were the priests who worked in Oebisfelde. In 1927 Velpke became the seat of a parish vicarie and got a local priest.

The church building site in Velpke had already been acquired in 1914, and the Velpke church building association was founded in 1924 . Construction of the church began in 1927 and it was consecrated by Bishop Nikolaus Bares on November 3, 1929 . At that time around 800 Catholics belonged to the catchment area of the church.

In 1946 the parish vicarie Bahrdorf belonging to Velpke was founded. However, no church was built in Bahrdorf; the services took place in the pastor's apartment. In 1954 the rectory was built in Velpke. On August 1, 1956, the parish vicarie Velpke became an independent parish (curate). In 1958 the board of trustees came to the then newly founded dean's office in Wolfsburg, previously it belonged to the dean's office in Celle. 1966 the parish vicarie Bahrdorf was dissolved again and came back to the parish Velpke.

1969/70 there was a redesign of the interior, a new altar from Velpker sandstone was Bishop on March 1, 1970 Heinrich Maria Janssen consecrated . In 1974 the community center was built. From 1976 to 1984 the church of St. Raphael in Parsau was also looked after by the Velpker pastor. In 1984 the last local pastor left Velpke and the pastor of St. Bernward in Wolfsburg took over pastoral care. In 1987 contact was made again with the former mother community in Oebisfelde, from which Velpke was now also separated by the inner German border . On September 17, 1987, a delegation from the Velpker parish met in the rectory of St. Elisabeth's Church in Mieste , as Oebisfelde was in the restricted area of the GDR and therefore could not be visited by strangers without permission. On January 1, 1988, the Velpke Curate was elevated to a parish.

In 1992 a new pipe organ was inaugurated, previously an electronic organ bought in 1968 was used.

On July 15, 2005, the pastor of the Church of St. Michael in Wolfsburg-Vorsfelde also took over the administration of the Velpker Church because the pastor of the St. Bernward Church had been retired without a local successor being appointed. From November 1st, 2006 the church belongs to the dean's office Wolfsburg-Helmstedt, which at that time was formed from the dean's office Wolfsburg and the Helmstedt part of the dean's office Helmstedt-Wolfenbüttel. Since September 1st 2010 the church belongs to the parish of St. Michael Wolfsburg .

Part of the parish garden is now left to the Velpke community, which has been using it to accommodate asylum seekers since January 2016 .
