Lower Franconian Way of St. James

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Unterfränkischer Jakobsweg is a Jakobsweg in Lower Franconia and runs between Schweinfurt (since 2000) or, depending on the perspective, now from Fulda or Bad Kissingen . At this point the route from Bad Kissingen is covered. For the Jakobsweg between Vacha and Bad Kissingen see Jakobsweg in the Rhön . In Würzburg , the route changes into the Franconian-Swabian Way of St. James .

history

In the past, trade routes or pilgrimage routes were mostly used. Exactly which one can no longer be completely clarified due to the differences. However, it can be assumed that the Jacob pilgrims did not undertake any additional efforts and mostly followed rivers.

Today's path was marked and cleared between Schweinfurt and Würzburg in 2000. The initiation comes from Pastor Roland Breitenbach from Schweinfurt.

Pilgrim hostels

Pilgrims' hostel in Schweinfurt

In Schweinfurt there is a restaurant with an attached pilgrims' hostel near the Maria Frieden church .

Binsbach pilgrim hostel

The pilgrims' hostel is located in the old rectory next to the church of St. James the Elder . The house, built in 1924, was last inhabited by Pastor Karl Geuppert. After his death, his sister and housekeeper lived in the house until her death in 2005. The house was already used as a pilgrims' hostel back then. The financing of the house was uncertain until the "Förderkreis Altes Pfarrhaus Binsbach" was founded in 2009. The house was bought and renovated by the diocese. During the patronage of the church, the house was consecrated as a pilgrim hostel by Auxiliary Bishop Ulrich Boom. The association, the diocese, the community and donations from other local societies and private individuals financed the renovation.

In addition to the pilgrims' hostel, a community center has also been built in the house. The community center with kitchen, group rooms and toilets is on the ground floor, the hostel with a total of six beds and sanitary facilities on the upper floor.
