Varg is a German Metal - band from Coburg . Since it was founded in 2005, there has been a constant change in the style of music. In the beginning the band played pure Pagan Metal , today there is a great influence of the New German Hardness and Melodic Death Metal or Modern Metal in the music. The band itself describes their music as "Wolf Metal".

Varg polarizes strongly, which is due to both the predominantly martial texts and the right-wing extremism allegations in 2010. Nowadays the band is internationally successful and has already played extensive tours across the North American continent .

history

Philipp Seiler at the Rockharz 2015.

The band Varg was founded in 2005 in Coburg, Upper Franconia, by guitarist and front man Philipp “Freki” Seiler and drummer Silvester “Fenrier” Grundmann. Shortly thereafter, one after the other, “Nivel” joined the band as bassist, the singer “Frost” and the guitarist “Da'ath”. The band name is inspired by Norse mythology and derived from the Old Norse word vargr ' wolf '. Regarding the linguistic relationship with the Norwegian musician and right-wing extremist Varg Vikernes , front man Seiler emphasized in an interview with Legacy magazine in 2007: "The name Varg has no connection with Burzum or Kristian Vikernes."

Varg made its first appearance in 2005 as the opening act for Sintech , whose members Timo Schwämmlein and Patrick Zarske later joined Varg. After bassist “Nivel” left, Schwämmlein played two concerts as a live bassist with Varg for the first time. Sebastian "Geri" Feick was the permanent successor to "Nivel". The first demo recording , Donareiche , was made in 2006, already without "Da'ath", which had left the band, and was released shortly afterwards. The only song of the same name contained on Donareiche can also be found on the band's debut album, Wolfszeit , which was released in March 2007 on the Heiden Klangwerke label. Before the recordings, Thomas "Skoll" Winkelmann had joined the band as bassist, while Feick had switched to guitar and also took over the vocals, since "Frost" had left the band. The reviews of Wolfszeit were mixed. The Trollhorn magazine wrote: "Ten tracks, ten crusher, ten out of ten!" From the other side, the album has been attributed, among other little variety and boredom. The album was advertised with a tour of Germany and the Netherlands, together with Nomans Land and Thrudvangar . The Wolfszeit Festival , organized by Seiler, took place for the first time in September 2007 .

At the beginning of 2008 Winkelmann and Feick left the band. They were replaced by Timo "Managarm" Schwämmlein and Patrick "Hati" Zarske. Bastian "Draugr" joined the band as the new singer. After several concerts in the summer of 2008, the split EP Schildfront was released in September of the same year together with the German pagan metal band Minas Morgul . In the same month the DVD Live at the Wolfszeit Festival was released through Twilight Distribution . The DVD includes the Varg performance at the aforementioned festival in 2007.

In spring 2009 "Draugr" left the band again. The new singer was Rico von Minas Morgul by the end of the year. The 2009 album Blutaar (named after an alleged method of execution by the Vikings ) was initially due to appear on Nuclear Blast , but rumors of a right-wing extremist attitude of the musicians prevented the media from getting the record deal . On the occasion of this incident, the Austrian concert promoter Rock the Nation decided to found their own label under the name NoiseArt Records and to publish Blutaar . Andy Classen (ex- Holy Moses ) took over the production of the album. The album was finally released on January 29, 2010. At the turn of the year 2009/2010, “Skalli” joined Varg as the new guitarist and Seiler took over the vocals , as he did for the Blutaar recordings .

The album received mixed reviews. Nils Herzog from Musikreviews.de wrote that the album did not set any recognizable accents despite the powerful sound. Also Powermetal.de certified the album little unique selling points, but a good production. In February and March 2010, the band's first European tour, the Paganfest Tour, took place. In the summer, performances at some of the most important European metal festivals followed, including the Wacken Open Air , Party.San , Metalcamp and the Metalfest .

In autumn 2010 the band's third studio album to date, Wolfskult , was recorded again together with Andy Classen at Stage One Studio . It was released on March 4, 2011 and entered the German album charts at number 33. The promotion tour took place again as part of the Pagan Festival.

In spring 2012, the band worked for almost eight weeks on the studio album Guten Tag , which was released in October 2012 via NoiseArt Records. The long-time friend of the band André Hofmann was hired as a producer; Jacob Hansen took care of the mastering . As a teaser for the album, two music videos were produced with the renowned Polish film crew Grupa13 and published on YouTube. A special feature of the Legacy issue # 5-2012 was an additional, exclusive EP from the band, which, in addition to some live recordings, also contained two new, unreleased songs. Also by the Legacy magazine, the album received good day the predicate "[...] Pagan Metal Album of the Year" with 15/15 points. The album reached number 25 in the German charts and number 45 in the Austrian charts. The promotion tour took the band together with Wintersun and Eluveitie to the USA and Canada for the first time .

In autumn 2013, the band separated from guitarist Skalli, who was replaced by the previous bassist, Managarm. Thomas "Skoll" Winkelmann, who had already played the electric bass with Varg from 2006 to 2008, joined as a live bass player.

In July 2015 Varg switched to the Austrian music label Napalm Records and brought out the EP Rotkäppchen as the first release on the new label on October 9, 2015 . The fifth studio album The End of All Lies was released in January 2016 . The Extended Edition contains the ten songs in English. Bassist and guitarist Manegarm left the band in 2018, whereupon the two remaining founding members Fenrir and Freki announced that they wanted to return to the band's classic style with pagan themes. In addition, two new guitarists came with Matthias Menta and Florian Zack.

style

Since the band's first release, there has been a steady musical development in the band. The debut album Wolfszeit was perceived in most reviews as pagan metal , and occasionally as a Viking metal album. Like its predecessor, Blutaar was assigned to Pagan Metal, but also has elements of Power Metal of German and British style.

The wolf cult can be musically classified in a similar way to Wolfszeit and Blutaar , but it already contains more influences from the New German Hardship . At the same time, there are increased Black Metal influences , especially in relation to the songs Naglfar and Blutdienst III . The album Guten Tag presented the strongest change in style to date. The influence of the New German Hardship grew, and textual associations with the Böhse Onkelz were increasingly aroused. With regard to the title track Guten Tag , the Metal Hammer draws parallels to Callejon and metalnews.de attests to a strong punk influence . The current album The End of All Lies continued the musical development of Guten Tag and is characterized by Melodic Death Metal with Metalcore influences and New German Hardness . Lyrically there are still great parallels to the band's early albums, although other topics, such as the philosophical view of humanity, are also increasingly being dealt with.

As usual for the extreme metal genres , the vocals are predominantly guttural , but in places also clearly performed. In folkloric instruments and similar synthesizer tracks is down to a few songs waived. On the other hand, there are passages performed acoustically on all albums. The texts are (except for A Thousand Eyes ) written exclusively in German. In the beginning they mainly dealt with Norse mythology and battle myths, but now mainly everyday topics that are rooted in the present, such as the allegations against the band. In terms of structure and choice of words, the texts are martial and relatively rough.

reception

Varg is perceived as very controversial by the trade press and the metal scene . Nicolai Teufel from metal1.info commented on the debut album : "Unfortunately, [t] he music from VARG [...] is by no means beyond criticism, because here relatively simple Pagan Metal is offered like from a cookbook." On the other hand, Skaal from the webzine dark-news.de praised the title song as "genial" and presents the album as exemplary for a German pagan metal band. Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann from the German rock-hard magazine also shared this opinion , who gave the album 8 out of 10 points and commented on it with the words "Pagan Metal as it should be, as only very few German bands can manage". The aspect that the album is very catchy and memorable due to its musical homogeneity was occasionally criticized as monotonous.

A lot of negative reviews were written about Blutaar in particular , but due to the controversy surrounding Philipp Seiler, not all of them can be rated as honest and meaningful. However, the webzine metalnews.de certified the band with this album that they are “beyond any doubt” and that they have created a “very self-confident and grown-up disc with many wonderful details and soulful, well thought-out songs”. Completely contrary expressed z. B. Nils Herzog in his review of Blutaar on musikreviews.de , who, despite some decent riffs and powerful production, described the music as "conservative" and with "superficial" and "stupid" lyrics.

Author Brother Cle from Rock Hard spoke about the wolf cult in a similar way to many other authors about the two previous albums. Although he subliminally criticized the songs that were “simply knitted” and based on “simple rhythms”, he praised the album as a “strong and noteworthy disc because of the great opening hit”. Markus Jakob from metalnews.de praised the improved songwriting on Wolfskult and drew the conclusion: “[A] damn strong [the album that] continues to divide the camps [will] [...] Lovers will love 'Wolfskult', haters will ' The wolf cult 'hate! ” The texts of the wolf cult were often criticized. Sebastian Kessler from Metal Hammer commented it as follows: “[T] he band [gives] the misunderstood, combative outsider: the Onkelz principle, only with word fields around old Teutons, predators and pack animals. The fan choir in the opener 'We are the wolves' is just the tip of the iceberg. "

The change of style to Guten Tag was rated differently. Robert Fröwein from stormbringer.at praised the album as the most exciting and varied album of the band and gave it 4 out of 5 points. Metal hammer author Enrico Ahlig, on the other hand, pointed out the diversity of the album as its biggest weak point, since Guten Tag sounds too little like Varg and too much like other bands like Rammstein and In Extremo . Ingo Spörl was genuinely enthusiastic about the Legacy magazine about Guten Tag . In his opinion, it offers “more [than wolf cult] in every respect: more variety, more dynamism, more courage to try new things.” He gave the album the highest rating of 15 points and described it as “the Pagan Metal album of the Year ". As with Guten Tag , the production of the albums was often rated very well.

The reviews of the current album The End of All Lies are very diverse in the specialist press. Ingo Nentwing from metalnews.de describes the album as a solid metal album with partly brilliant guitar work and many catchy compositions. Although in Nentwing's opinion it is not a "high flyer", but also not a bad album, he gives it a neutral rating of 3.4 out of 7 points. Sabine Vollert from the Austrian webzine stormbringer.at predicts the band will continue to have a successful musical future and rate the album with 4 out of 5 stars. Vollert's fellow writer Alex M., on the other hand, criticizes the songwriting as well as the, in his opinion, almost "sterile" (over) production of the album and only awards one of 5 stars. The production is highlighted by "DT Metal" from the webzine metalstorm.net as the best of all Varg albums. In his review he gives 8.3 out of 10 points.

controversy

Philipp "Freki" Seiler is the organizer of the Wolfszeit Festival. This came under fire when the German neo-Nazi and former absurd drummer Hendrik Möbus was on the guest list in 2007 and the festival was presented in 2008 by the controversial A-Blaze magazine (which, according to rumors, is also Möbus). After some criticism arose, the organizers issued a guideline prohibiting the wearing of T-shirts from well-known NSBM bands. In 2012, the A-Blaze made it known that the database of the online mail order business of the right-wing extremist brand Thor Steinar had been hacked by Antifa activists in March 2010 and that Seiler's name and address can also be found in the list of alleged customers.

Shortly before signing the contract with Nuclear Blast in 2010, numerous blogs popped up on the Internet that attacked Varg directly. Among other things, a photo of Philipp Seiler with an Absurd T-shirt and his specialist thesis on the right-wing extremist Pagan Metal scene were published, the latter on a homepage of the right-wing extremist Pagan Front. In addition, a subpage of the Twilight distribution was created and an alleged Varg blog was opened. According to the band, the official website was mirrored by “agitators” and provided with fake, right-wing extremist statements. Nuclear Blast rejected the contract a little later without giving reasons, after the preliminary contract had already been signed. At first, Seiler wanted to “sweep everything under the carpet. A stupid mistake ”, as he stated to the Metal Hammer . He also considered leaving the band; the other band members said, however, that this was out of the question for them.

After Varg tried to refute the allegations in an interview in Legacy 01/2010 and that Rock Hard printed a statement from Seiler, the Legacy moved a little later on distance. The April 2010 issue of Rock Hard offered Seiler space on two pages to refute the allegations. In the interview, Seiler admits to having made mistakes in the past and distances himself from the allegations that Varg is a right-wing band; He described the people involved in the photograph of Philipp Seilers with Absurd T-shirts as “so-called 'fun Nazis'”, who provoke one another with Hitler salutes and Nazi T-shirts, but have no right-wing extremist inclinations, and neither do they outside accordingly. He got in touch with Möbus after having dealt with the political connections in Pagan Metal because of his specialist work and wanted to form his own picture. Varg had "always spoken against NAZIS" and was not perceived by the extreme right wing of the metal scene as one of their own bands, but rather rejected. He made similar statements in a video message published on the Internet. However, criticism was also voiced against this distancing offensive. In an interview with A-Blaze magazine, Hendrik Möbus commented on the allegations against Seilers by saying that he was too old to “claim to be just a stupid boy” and that he wanted to “retrospectively” his actions. explain with excuses, which one would at best grant a toddler, “with which he creates aversions against himself.

The controversy not only runs through various music magazines, but also through the festival culture in Germany. Those responsible for the Wacken Open Air discussed whether they would like Varg to perform at the festival in August 2010. Eventually it was publicly announced that the band would be allowed to play despite the controversy. The Party.San also confirmed their announced participation in the 2010 festival not in silence, but with a statement on the controversy surrounding the band, referring to Seiler's possible ability to learn. In 2010, the Ragnarök Festival asked the band to perform without Seiler, as the focus was primarily on Seiler and they didn't want to punish the whole band. After the criticism of the band had subsided in 2011, Varg was invited to the Ragnarök Festival as a replacement headliner at short notice in 2012. Several institutions, including Nuclear Blast, were ultimately convinced of the distancing of Seiler and the band from the right-wing extremist scene, so that Varg merchandise is now being sold again via Nuclear Blast, and again regularly via the band in all three major German metal magazines is reported. In 2015 the band performed at the "Rage Against Racism" in Duisburg, where the singer was pelted with chlorine.
