Veiros is a Portuguese municipality ( Freguesia ) in the district ( Concelho ) of Estremoz with 1036 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

history

The place existed since the 5th century AD, its name is believed to be of Roman origin. It comes from Valerius and changed via Valeriusa and Valeirosa , via Vaeeiros in the 13th century, to the current form. The Arab Moors advancing on the Iberian Peninsula since 711 also took Veiros in the course of their eight-year campaign. It was part of the Muslim Almohad Empire when King D. Afonso II conquered the site for the Kingdom of Portugal in 1217 . The Order of Aviz founded and fortified the meantime probably deserted place in the year 1258 new, as part of the resettlement policy after the Portuguese Reconquista . The Duke Alfonso von Braganza was born here in 1377 , and the Countess Beatriz von Arundel was born here in 1386 .

King Manuel I granted the place its first city rights in 1510 , and Veiros remained the seat of an independent district. The place suffered some damage during the Restoration War , especially in 1662 when João de Áustria Veiros tried to take over for Habsburg Spain. As punishment for the armed resistance of the place, he had the tower of the fortress blown up. In 1665 , the Marquis of Caracena took the castle again and had parts of the place set on fire.

In 1855 the Veiros district was dissolved and incorporated into the Fronteira district , and from 1872 to the Monforte district. Veiros has belonged to Estremoz County since 1895 .
