The Verbandsgemeinde Kastellaun emerged from the Kastellaun office, which had existed since 1927, as part of the Rhineland-Palatinate functional and territorial reform carried out in the second half of the 1960s and early 1970s . In connection with the Rhineland-Palatinate municipal and administrative reform of 2010, the local parishes of Lahr , Mörsdorf and Zilshausen became part of the association municipality by means of a state law of November 22, 2013, effective July 1, 2014 from the Treis-Karden ( Cochem-Zell district ), which was dissolved at the same time Kastellaun incorporated.
