List of cooperative banks in Germany

The Volksbank Lingen eG is a cooperative bank . In addition to the Stadtmitte branch, there are fourteen other branches in the city, in the Emsland district and in the county of Bentheim .

history

From the foundation to the end of the Second World War

On June 21, 1893, 26 citizens of Lingen founded the bank. It traded as a “savings and loan fund, registered cooperative with unlimited liability”. On July 7, 1893, the entry was made in the cooperative register at the Lingen district court . The financial institution was based on the cooperative principle propagated by Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen and Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch . It should be committed to the members, anchored locally, networked supra-regionally, organized democratically and based on cooperative values.

In the first few years of its activity, the institute suffered from a crisis of confidence that resulted from the bankruptcy of the local craftsmen's association founded in 1853 in 1895 . Nevertheless, the number of members rose to 1911 to 156. In 1917, could acquire shares in cooperatives that their persons residing had in surrounding communities.

During the years of the Weimar Republic , the bank survived several serious crises. The hyperinflation as the culmination of inflation in Germany since 1914 caused the money home to his duties in 1924 after the conversion Reichsmark had to stop for a few months. The rise in membership to 169 by the end of 1925 indicated that the difficulties had been overcome. In 1926, however , the activities of a counterfeiter led to losses totaling 75,000 marks. This renewed crisis was overcome, among other things, by the financial demands made on the members. The Rendant , appointed in 1927 , caused another existential crisis by admitting high debts to third-party banks and issuing insufficiently secured loans and business within the family at the expense of the bank. The renovation was again successful thanks to the cooperative solidarity of the members.

In 1927, the bank rented separate rooms for the first time. Until then, banking took place in private rooms. At the turn of the year 1927/1928 the company moved to a building directly behind the city's historic town hall. In 1928 the bank changed its name and called itself "Spar- und Leihbank, Lingen (Ems), registered cooperative with unlimited liability". In 1931 she moved again, this time to her own room. Their place of business was now in a building erected in 1583 on the market (today: Kivelingshaus ). The number of members was 214 in 1932, and 242 a year later.

In 1940 the liability of the individual members was limited to 1,000 marks. Another name change took place on March 7, 1944. The bank was now called "Raiffeisen-Bank Lingen / Ems, registered cooperative with limited liability" or "Raiffeisenbank Lingen-Ems eGmbH"

From the currency reform to the present

After the end of the Second World War, the general inflation of money put a strain on all banking transactions. In 1946, however, new and larger premises were moved into (Markt 17). With the currency reform in June 1948 - at that time the cooperative bank had 253 members - the steady upswing of the economy began , in which the Raiffeisenbank in Lingen also participated. In 1950 it had 402 members. In 1951, the balance sheet total exceeded DM 1 million . In 1952 the number of members had almost doubled compared to 1948, it was now 497. In 1955 the bank had 682 members and had a balance sheet total of 1.7 million DM. The deposits also grew. In 1948 they amounted to 156,308 DM. At the end of 1952 this value was 1,346,185 DM.

The development of the 1950s continued in the following decade. In 1960 the bank had 845 members, the balance sheet total was 5.1 million DM. In 1967 the number of members exceeded the thousand mark, it was 1,068 at the end of the year, the balance sheet total was 11.687 million DM. 1964 the processing of bank data accelerated by introducing a punch card system . In the 1960s, the bank also expanded across the board : It founded branches in Baccum (1962), Laxten (1966) and Damaschke (1968) as well as two branches in the city of Lingen (Meppener Straße and Rheiner Straße). The first branch of Raiffeisenbank Lingen eG had existed for around two decades; it was built in Dalum in 1948 .

1970 merged the Bank with the Raiffeisen banks in Bramsche, Lohne-Wietmarschen and Holthausen, all of which had until then operates independently. The year that the cooperative bank in Lohne was founded was a long time ago: it was established on November 19, 1896 as the “Lohne savings and loan fund”. The Raiffeisenbank in Lohne and the branch in Wietmarschen had 708 members at the time of the merger. The institute in Holthausen - Biene also had a long tradition; it was founded on March 16, 1897. In 1969 it had more than 400 members. The "savings and loan fund" in Bramsche was founded on April 12, 1904.

The merged bank had 3,200 members in 1972 and total assets of DM 51 million. Business operations began on September 30, 1973 in the newly built building in downtown Lingen, where the main office is still located today. In 1974 the law on cooperatives was changed. From then on, the general assembly of members was replaced by a representative assembly (one representative for every 50 members). In 1978 the balance sheet total exceeded the 100 million threshold, 118 million DM were reported. With effect from January 1, 1979 , Raiffeisenbank Lingen took over a branch of Volksbank Osnabrück . In mid-1979 it changed its name and has been operating under the name “Volksbank Lingen eG” ever since. At the end of 1979, the membership list showed 4,569 names.

On November 16, 1983, the extension of the Stadtmitte branch in Lookenstrasse was completed. The Volksbank was the first Lingen financial institution to have a self-service room with ATMs . In 1985 the number of members reached the mark of 5,000, at the end of 1987 the bank had 6,001 members. In 1992 the number of members was 7,324, the balance sheet total was 376.2 million DM. In 1999 the bank merged with “Volksbank Bawinkel eG”. At that time it was represented at three locations: in Bawinkel (founded on November 22nd, 1885 under the direction of August Degen ), in Brögbern (since October 17th, 1959) and in Osterbrock (since October 5th, 1960). At the end of 1999 the merged bank had a membership of 11,038, the balance sheet total was 807 million DM. In 2005 the membership list contained 12,997 names, the balance sheet total had grown to 499.6 million euros.

With retroactive effect from January 1, 2014, Volksbank Lingen eG merged with “Volksbank Langen-Gersten eG”. This bank with locations in Langen and Gersten had 1,301 members at the end of 2013. It closed the 2013 financial year with total assets of EUR 47.2 million. The cooperative banks founded in Langen in 1921 and in Gersten in 1923 merged in 1961.

In the 2017 financial year, the balance sheet total exceeded the one billion euro mark for the first time.
