Valery Nikolajewitsch Bragin ( Russian Валерий Николаевич Брагин ; born May 31, 1956 in Lesnoi , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian ice hockey player and today's coach . He was in charge of the Russian U20 national team for many years , and has been the head coach of the Russian men's national team and SKA Saint Petersburg since June 2020 .
Career
Valery Bragin began his career as a hockey player at HK Spartak Moscow , for which he was active from 1978 to 1981 in the Vysschaya League , the highest Soviet league, and with which he won the Spengler Cup in 1980 . The attacker then played for Spartak's league rivals Chimik Voskressensk for eight years . The Russian let his career expire at Rødovre IK in the Danish Eliteserien . With the Danes he won the national championship in 1990 and was runner-up a year later. Following the 1993/94 season, Bragin ended his active career at the age of 38.
Valeri Bragin began his coaching career at Chimik Voskressensk , Kristall Saratow and HK Spartak Moscow , whom he was head coach of in the 2007/08 season in the Russian Super League . After a year break he was head coach at Atlant Mytishchi from the Continental Hockey League for the 2009/10 season . In 2010, Bragin took over the position of head coach of the Russian U20 national team , with which he immediately became world champion at the 2011 U20 Junior World Championship . At the 2012 tournament he won the silver medal with the U20 selection.
Between May and December 2012, Bragin was under contract as head coach at HK CSKA Moscow , then he worked as an assistant and from 2015 as head coach of the Russian U20 team. With this he won the silver medal in 2015, 2016 and 2020, as well as the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in 2017 and 2019.
In January 2020 he became the assistant coach of Alexei Kudaschow at both SKA Saint-Petersburg and the Russian men's national team . In June 2020 he replaced Kudashov in both positions.
