Washington County is a county in the US state of Vermont in the United States . The county seat is in Montpelier .

The county in central Vermont has an area of 1801 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Lamoille County , Caledonia County , Orange County , Addison County, and Chittenden Counties .
history
Washington County was formed on November 1, 1810 from parts of Caledonia County, Chittenden County, and Orange County. Originally called Jefferson County, it was given its current name on November 8, 1814. It was named after President George Washington .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 58,039 people. There were 23,659 households and 15,047 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.05% white, 0.47% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.01% residents from the Pacific island area and 0.26% from others ethnic groups; 1.34% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.26% of the population.
Of the 23,659 households, 31.00% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 50.60% were married couples living together, 9.20% were single mothers. 36.40% were not families. 28.50% are single households and 10.20% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.50% residents under 18 years of age, 8.90% between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.70% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.00% between 45 and 64 years of age 12.90% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.10 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 40,972 , and the median income for a family is $ 51,075. Males had a median income of $ 33,181 versus $ 26,369 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,113. 8.00% of the population and 5.50% of families are below the poverty line. 9.10% of these were under 18 years of age and 6.80% were 65 years of age or older.

There are also the Census-designated placees for statistical purposes : Cabot, East Barre, East Montpelier, Graniteville, Plainfield, South Barre, Waitsfield, Websterville and Worcester as well as the Unincorporated Villages Adamant, East Calais, North Montpelier, Northfield Falls and Tangletown.
