detail

The water art building ( Czech : Vodárna ) in the park of the Lednice Castle (German: Eisgrub ) was a technical installation and at the same time a staffage building . Today it belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape in the Czech Republic .

Geographical location

The water art building is located on the right bank of the old course of the Thaya , in the Lednice castle park, northeast of the castle and south of the castle pond.

history

From 1643 water arts were installed in the park of the Lednice chateau. The energy for the pumps required for this came from water mills on the Thaya , from which the required water was taken. A first elevated tank was also built for this purpose. Under Prince Josef Wenzel von Liechtenstein , the system was rebuilt in the 18th century and the elevated tank installed in the attic of the castle. However, this did not prove successful, so that in 1785 the facility was fundamentally rebuilt again. It was then in operation largely unchanged until 1845.

The building that can be seen today belongs to the fourth generation of the water arts in the Eisgrub castle park. It was built between 1843 and 1845 - parallel to the palm house of Eisgrub Castle . A historic Kaplan turbine was in use here until 1993 . It is said to be in the Technical Museum in Brno today .

Building

What is particularly striking about the water art building are the neo-Moorish-style facades . The architect was Georg Wingelmüller . In details, he referred to the minaret in Lednice Park.

The water art building is two-story. The upper floor housed steam turbines and pumps that generated the pressure required for the fountains and watering the higher parts of the park. The water supply for the palm house was also connected here. In addition, the water supply to the castle for the toilets, bathrooms and the fire extinguishing system as well as for a hydraulic elevator system was attached to the system . Pumps in the water art building are still used to irrigate the park today. A steam bath has been set up on the lower floor of the water art building .

In 1903 the technical equipment was supplemented by a Girard turbine for power generation . Not only the castle, but also parts of the communities Eisgrub and Feldsberg were supplied with electricity from here.
