The Waste Management Phoenix Open is one of the golf tournaments held on the PGA Tour , which will be held at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) of Scottsdale Arizona in early spring. The tournament, originally launched as the Arizona Open , was known as the Phoenix Open for most of the time .
Tournament history
The history of the Phoenix Open began in 1932 and seemed to have ended by 1935. The rebirth of the tournament began in 1939 with the idea of the passionate golfer, Bob Goldwater, Sr. who persuaded the Thunderbirds Society to host this event. The tournament was then held at the Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona . Since 1955, the Arizona Country Club (also in Phoenix) alternated annually in hosting with the Phoenix Country Club until the 1975 tournament was held exclusively in the Arizona Country Club. In 1987 the tournament was moved to its current location, the popular TPC of Scottsdale , a Stadium Course . Usually around 500,000 spectators attend the Phoenix Open during the 4 days of the tournament. The most popular hole for spectators is hole 16 with a classic "amphitheater" backdrop. Bad shots are acknowledged at this simple hole with booh calls, while good shots are celebrated with frenetic cheers. The most popular golfer right now is the former Arizona State University graduate Phil Mickelson .
