Christmas Wonder is a German television film in the spring film series by Michael Karen , which was broadcast for the first time on December 22, 2019 as a Christmas special on ZDF .

The film tells the story of the village helper Katja Baumann, played by Simone Thomalla , who supports families in emergency situations and at the same time tries to bring spring into people's hearts. It is the 23rd film in a series that focuses on the people of the place called Spring .

action

Village helper Katja Baumann is on Christmas vacation and is redeeming her birthday present: a ski vacation with Mark and her daughter Kiki. As soon as they arrive at the ski hut, they meet the drunk Lutz Engel in the parking lot. Only with a lot of control does Mark avoid a fight with the bad-tempered man. Engel confides to the waitress that he has acute family problems and that his wife had shown him out at the door for Christmas. In his condition, he shouldn't have driven a car and certainly shouldn't have gone to the ski slopes. But Engel can no longer assess this and now causes an accident with serious consequences. He collides with Emily, a kid from a ski group. Since Katja and Kiki are the first to arrive at the scene of the accident and have received medical training, they help immediately and carefully. The mountain rescue service is informed and the unconscious child is brought to the spring hospital by helicopter. However, Prof. Gabriel has just resigned from his position there and transferred the management of the clinic to Dr. Stefanie Schneiderhahn handed over. Due to the serious head injury, the doctor does not trust herself to undertake an operation which, after a detailed examination, has shown that it is more complicated than expected. Due to a congenital aneurysm just behind the skullcap, there is an acute danger to life and transfer to another clinic would be too risky. In addition, time is of the essence and Schneiderhahn tries to persuade her old professor to operate again as an exception. But he has to refuse because he didn't say goodbye so quickly for no reason. Because Parkinson's disease progresses, he can no longer perform operations, but he hadn't told anyone so directly, which is now changing. Schneiderhahn therefore sees the only option in finding a specialist who comes after spring and operates here. There seems to be a little Christmas miracle when a doctor actually calls. Dr. Thanner had learned from Prof. Gabriel and therefore feels morally obliged to help. However, given the current situation, he too thinks the operation is too difficult; if necessary, he would risk it together with the professor. However, he has already gone deep into the mountains to his hut and cannot be reached by phone there.

Katja's cozy Christmas Eve falls into the water because she cannot get into her quarters due to an avalanche. So Mark tries to find a room for the three of them in a hotel, which luckily succeeds. While he is preparing it for a little Christmas, Katja goes to the hospital to ask about the state of affairs. The first thing she meets is Lutz Engel, who caused the accident, who has to have his broken bone treated here after the collision. His daughter Lilly is also here because she wants to visit her father. She suffers massively from the family situation and wants nothing more than that her parents find a way to get along with each other. Katja even had to help the family for a short time when Karin Engel collapsed due to a circulatory collapse. Katja uses the opportunity to give the family man a little help on how he can bring his relationship with his wife to a reasonable level. In the meantime, however, she is being led by Dr. Schneiderhahn called, who asks her to visit the professor in his hut. She hopes that if Katja asks him, he will at least act as a consultant for the operation. The way to the hut is very long for the village helper, because she has to cope with the rest of the way on foot because a fallen tree is blocking the forest path. When she reaches Gabriel, he and Katja make their way to the clinic without hesitation. While the doctors carry out the risky procedure on Emily, Katja uses the waiting time to talk to Karin Engel. She asks her not to withhold her husband from the children, no matter how strained their relationship may be, especially not now for Christmas. Everything ends well, because the operation succeeds and Emily's mother can happily hug her daughter. Karin Engel asks her husband when she sees him standing helplessly in front of the house. His anger at God and the world has given way to the realization of his own mistakes. Emily now has to celebrate Christmas in the hospital, but so do other sick children and she has at least her mother and sister with her. The giving of presents to Katja, Mark and Kiki is a bit unusual, because since their presents are temporarily unreachable in their quarters, they put letters under the Christmas tree in which it says what they want to give themselves.

criticism

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv said: “The winter special of the ZDF 'Spring' series […] offers wonderful (postcard) views for winter and ski holiday fans because of the great masses of snow, but the action works sometimes almost like an unwanted parody of the 'Mother Teresa' genre. "" What is usually the strength of this series, the aura of everyday life, the increasing abandonment of the simple fall-height dramaturgy, sometimes even a pleasant lightness ( Cristina do Rego is already missing a lot in this episode) and incidental conflict situations, that hardly comes into play in this Christmas special. "

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm waived the “thumbs” rating for this episode. They judged: “A heartbreak melodrama that goes into full force. All human problems are solved just fine. To the finale: a beautiful, perfect world. ”Conclusion:“ What a soul in the deep snow. ”
