The Wied-Scala is an independent cinema in Neitersen in the Westerwald , the first opening as a movie theater took place in the year 1956th The name refers to the river Wied , which flows directly past the cinema building. For the foyer of the cinema is one of a small cafe , which is supplemented in the summer by a beer garden. The hall and balcony offer 110 seats. For events without seating, there is space for around 220 people. In the meantime closed for a few years, the Wied-Scala has since reopened in 1988 as a cultural and event location for a wide variety of topics and has been regularly awarded with cinema program awards for an outstanding film program at state and federal level since 1989 . In recent years, extensive modernization work has been carried out with regard to demonstration and sound technology, as well as seating and fire protection , in order to take into account the increased demands on infrastructure and security. Despite these measures, the 1950s style of the furnishings and the original character of the cinema were largely retained.

history

Wied-Scala cinema hall

On June 9, 1956, the opening of the Wied-Scala as a film theater took place with the screening of the film Way without turning back , which is housed in the annex of a historic mill to this day . Even then, sound-absorbing plastic surfaces were attached to the walls and ceilings , which met the acoustic requirements of a concert hall design. The lighting was provided by tall, torch-like lighting fixtures on the walls. The hall, which was over five meters high and had 270 seats at the time, was supplied with fresh air by a system operated by a circulation process . In winter, warm air heating heated the room. The projection room was equipped with two so-called cinema units for showing films .

Wied-Scala was run as a family business for 30 years . However, competition from new, neighboring cinema centers increased the competitive pressure, which had to be given in in 1985 when the cinema was closed. In 1988 the Wied-Scala was reopened with a new concept , an expanded range and an innovative program of events. In 2013 the 25th anniversary was celebrated.

Concept and programming

Wied-Scala foyer

Due to the proximity of so-called multiplex cinemas with premieres in Siegburg , Siegen , Limburg , Koblenz and Hachenburg , the concept of program design as a follow-up consistently consists in the presentation of high-quality and demanding films, some of which are shown in different supporting programs. Despite the clear focus as a special art film theater, current films are also shown, which necessarily have a corresponding share in the business result. When it comes to deliveries by the film distributors, the joint scheduling with the Cinexx cinema in Hachenburg has a positive effect, despite its clear content-related separation.

In recent years, event concepts have increasingly been developed and implemented, some of which go well beyond the pure film screenings. Connections were created between “film” on the one hand and various areas of culture and daily life on the other. In addition, pedagogical and social topics have been taken up which, in combination with suitable film events, offer a new approach to social problems. In this respect, the Wied-Scala is also a socio-cultural institution.

The Wied-Scala with its premises and its technical infrastructure is also available for events in other cultural areas. One result of these efforts is a growing visitor potential, which accepts and appreciates a corresponding offer even in a sparsely populated and structurally poor region. The catchment area extends to Cologne, 60 kilometers away .
