The district of Yanama is located in the province of Yungay in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was founded on August 2, 1920 and has an area of 279.85 km². At the 2017 census, there were 5292 residents in the Yungay district. In 1993 the population was 7145, in 2007 it was 6979. The administrative center is the village of Yanama, at an altitude of 3375 m , with 439 inhabitants (as of 2017). The district is mostly inhabited by Indians . About 87 percent of the population speak Quechua as their mother tongue .
Geographical location
The district of Yanama is located on the east side of the Cordillera Blanca in the extreme northeast of the Yungay province. It extends between the Quebrada Yurma rivers in the north and the Río Cunya, both tributaries of the Río Yanamayo .
The district of Yanama borders in the north on the districts of Huayllán ( Pomabamba province ), Lucma and Llumpa (both in the province of Mariscal Luzuriaga ), in the east on the district of San Luis ( province of Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald ), in the south on the districts of Acochaca ( province Asunción) ) and Shilla District ( Carhuaz Province ) and to the west to the Yungay , Caraz and Santa Cruz Districts (the last two in Huaylas Province ).
