The ZDF dream film was a ZDF program concept in the 1980s. With the ZDF dream film, the ZDF pursued the approach of letting the viewer decide on the program content for themselves. For this purpose, viewers could vote on the Saturday evening film in the summer months between 1983 and 1989. There was a choice of three films, of which the one with the most votes was ultimately shown. In the beginning, voting was carried out by postcard in cooperation with the television magazine Hörzu and Bild , which also included the corresponding voting cards. The vote was later carried out by means of televoting in the Tele-Dialog used by ZDF . It was now possible to vote up to about an hour before the start of the broadcast. Shortly before the start of the film, the result was announced and the selected film was presented.

criticism

In the beginning it was criticized that fewer than 30,000 viewers took part in the postcard votes. This corresponded to only a fraction of the total audience, who thus dictated the program for the masses. It was also criticized that there were too different films to choose from and therefore a program that only followed the mainstream was created.
