El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera is a Mexican-American animated TV series produced for Nickelodeon and Nicktoons Network. A screening of the show was on January 19, 2007 in the first ever Nickelodeon Creative Summit held in San Juan, Puerto Rico as a special treat for the 60 exclusive attendees (The Summit was lead by 4 of the main branch of Nickelodeon). Later sneak peeks aired on February 19, with the series television debut on March 3, 2007 for both networks. It premiered on the Canadian YTV on May 4, 2007. [7]

Premise

The show centers on Manny Rivera, a neutral Mexican-American boy living in Miracle City. He owns a magic belt that lets him gain super powers by turning the buckle and changing into El Tigre. However, he frequently wavers between using them for good like his heroic father Rodolfo, who is also the brave superhero White Pantera, or mischief and selfish reasons, like his villainous grandfather, the evil supervillain Puma Loco. He now becomes a famous country lead singer and a guitarist of the band Los Matadores.

Characters

Main characters

  • Manny Rivera/El Tigre (Full Name: Manuel Pablo Gutierrez O'Brien Equihua Rivera): A 13-year-old Mexican-American boy, son of a brave superhero, and grandson of an evil supervillain; he wants to be good for his heroic father, but being bad like his villainous grandfather is too much fun. When he spins his mystical belt buckle, Manny transforms into the brave and powerful tiger-themed superhero El Tigre, who struggles with whether to use his superpowers for good or evil. His superhero name translates from Spanish to "The Tiger", which refers to his costume & claws. His powers include sharp retractable claws that can cut through almost anything, shooting out his hand like a grappling hook, super strength, and a super jumping ability. In The Grave Escape, he gained the power to summon a Tiger spirit, creating a large green Tiger-shaped energy field around himself that mimics his motions. He often does bad things but nearly always does good things to make up for it. El Tigre briefly developed a crush on the villain Black Cuervo, even calling her mi amor (Spanish for "my love"), but seems to lose interest in her at the end of the episode, Enter the Cuervo. It was shown in the episode, The Moustache Kid, that other creatures are able to use his mystic belt buckle, as shown when Dr. Chipotle, Jr. used it to amplify the power of his guacamole creature, giving it cat-like ears, white tufts of hair on the sides of its head, and claw gloves. His father wrongfully shouts out Manny's full name very quickly whenever he does something exceptionally bad. He was the only Rivera to ever survive the Rivera "Super Macho Blitz". Now Manny becomes a famous country lead singer and a guitarist of his favorite kid band Los Matadores singing their most popular song "Cuidame, Mi Amor Bonita (Ay Queso Del Taquito!)" to Frida Suarez, stays to be an ageless 13-year-old boy with her, and has a 10-year-old daughter Frima Rivera/El Gato.
  • Rodolfo Rivera/White Pantera: The heroic father of Manny Rivera/El Tigre and son of Grandpapi Rivera/Puma Loco. White Pantera can refer to either a panther or to any big cat. He is semi-retired but has about as much trouble giving up being White Pantera as his father has giving up being Puma Loco (he never removes his magic boots, even when asleep, and only seems to take his mask off to do laundry). Rodolfo has a love-hate relationship with his father. Despite their differences and Grandpapi's desire to pull Manny over to the dark side, Rodolfo always puts his family first. His source of power is his Bronze Boots of Truth, which give him superhuman speed and strength and make anyone who touches the sole of the boots have to tell the truth. It seems that even though White Pantera is a hero, he inherited some bad habits from his father, such as when he locked Manny and Frida in Manny's room with a pizza to be alone with Maria during family dinner night. Notably, he is the only superhero to escape death at the jaws of El Mal Verde.
  • Granpapi Rivera/Puma Loco: The villainous father of Rodolfo Rivera/White Pantera and villainous grandfather of Manny Rivera/El Tigre who moved in with his son and grandson to help look after them after Manny's mom left (and because he crashed his evil blimp headquarters into a hamburger stand), Granpapi Rivera is a friendly old man who loves his grandson Manny very much. He is also a retired super villain who still enjoys cooking up trouble every now and then, especially if it means getting to spend time with Manny. His name means "Crazy Puma" in Spanish. Back in the old days, Grandpapi was one of the most feared villains who no one could catch (except his son White Pantera, of course). He wants Manny to follow in his footsteps, even encouraging him to do bad things like stealing. Despite the fact he is evil, there are things he won't do, such as betray his family. He always comes through when they're in danger even though it'd be easier for him to pull off crimes without his son in the way. His source of power is the Golden Sombrero of Chaos, which is able to transform into a robotic suit, similar to how a Transformer (Optimus Prime for example) transforms, and can produce several different weapons such as claws, a giant drill, and even a small hot air balloon, though the most commonly used are missiles. In Puma Licito, It is revealed that Grandpapi actually owns the house he, Rodolfo and Manny live in.
  • Frida Suárez/La Tigresa: Frida Suárez is Manny's 12-year-old best friend who's not always a good influence on Manny. She is up for anything, even if it gets them in trouble, which can be another problem because of her evil father, Emiliano Suárez. She also plays in a band called the Atomic Sombreros which is her worst nightmare. Frida always wears a pair of red goggles over her blue hair. She will even cheer Manny on if he is doing something wrong (like the laser tatoo maker Manny wanted and stole his dad's money, that was for buying guacamole, to purchase. Frida cheered him on like always). Her rival is Zoe Aves who is secretly "Black Cuervo." Frida loves animals and is always with Manny at any time. She's a Mexican-American too. Now Frida becomes an ordinary girl who falls in love with her famous country lead singer Manny Rivera, stays to be an ageless 12-year-old girl with him, and has a 10-year-old daughter Frima Rivera/El Gato.
  • María Rivera/La Plata Peligrosa (Retired)/Pink Jaguar: The wicked mother of Manny Rivera/El Tigre and the wicked ex-wife of Rodolfo Rivera/White Pantera who, as claims Rodolfo, "he never thinks about anymore", but Rodolfo still seems to be madly in love with María. She hated the thought of her husband constantly risking his life being a hero. Since Rodolfo seemed unable to give up being White Pantera, María and Rodolfo divorced. María went on to take the world by storm as a famous mariachi singer and Manny was able to see some of her concerts. However, she has recently given up the life of fame and fortune to be closer to her son Manny. She moved back to Miracle City and is now the wicked school librarian. Rodolfo believes he has a chance of winning her back so the family could live together again. Although considering why they broke up it seems unlikely. She was once a wicked superheroine named La Plata Peligrosa (lit. Silver Danger) due to a magic glove she got at a college party, but she eventually became too obsessed with fighting and quit. Now Maria Rivera becomes a wicked supervillainess Pink Jaguar.
  • Frima Rivera/El Gato: Manny & Frida's 10-year-old daughter. She has brown hair with blue streaks.

Villains

  • Santana of the Dead: The most evil and feared supervillain in all of Miracle City. From her lair in the abandoned prison cemetery, the 200-year old skeleton lady plots to overthrow all living beings and claim Miracle City for herself. She once tried to use a special gem to rule the world in "Dia De Los Malos". She totally despises El Tigre (and all Rivera men for that matter), especially Puma Loco, who just so happens to be her former sweetheart. Her source of power is her Mystic Guitar, which allows her to summon countless skeleton minions when she strums it. The Guitar is also her weakness because if the Guitar is destroyed everything it rose from the dead (Sartana included) reverts back to dead. This is how she is normally defeated but she seems to somehow keep getting it back. Perhaps the scariest thing is that she can never truly be destroyed and always finds a way to come back to life. Manny and Frida stole the guitar when Manny accidentally killed Zebra Donkey in an attempt to bring him back to life in time for the Zebra Donkey festival.
  • Sergio/Señor Siniestro: A 13-year-old Italian-American boy who was transferred to Miracle City from Italy. On his first day at Leone Middle School, he foolishly wore his beloved cowboy costume, complete with broomstick horsey. Humiliation, unintentionally led by Manny ensued and Sergio swore vengeance on Miracle City, especially Manny. Sergio uses a 10 foot tall robot suit to pose as an adult cowboy supervillain named Señor Siniestro. Senor Siniestro is usually found spewing cowboy lingo in an absurdly inaccurate Texas accent while looking for his foe, Manny Rivera. He also is one of the competitors of the Super-Villain Grand Prix and kicked the other competitors out of the race and got crushed by a crocodile and finished 2nd place over a crocodile. He also tried make Manny and Frida late so they could be expelled. He also made the students try to make a horse suit which got destroyed by El Tigre.
  • Flock of Fury: A family of bird-themed supervillains.
    • Zoe Aves/Black Cuervo: A 14-year-old Mexican-American girl. Her villain name translates to Black Crow. Zoe's family clan is full of super heroes and villains called the Flock of Fury. Just like the Riveras all have feline alter egos, the Flock of Fury is made up of birdie members. By day she's disinterested in life in general, but when night falls she's Black Cuervo, a take-charge raven-themed supervillainess who is much more full of life then the goth Zoe. She is equipped with a laser blaster on her wrist and jet-wings on her back, as well as a sonic device she can use to send out a distress call to signal her family for help. Zoe has an evil mom named La Voltura, a really evil Grandmami known as Lady Gobbler, and a very evil 11-year-old brother Orlando Aves known as Green Aguila. As both Black Cuervo and Zoe, she is Frida Suarez's nemesis. In her first appearance of the series, El Tigre seems to develop a crush on her. It is then revealed that Frida somehow "humiliated" Zoe once but it is never explained. After discovering her plot, he loses interest just as Black Cuervo has developed a crush on him at the end of the episode before Manny hits her with the "Spinning Armadillo", a special move that had taken Manny years to learn (but "Eye Caramba" may or may not hint that El Tigre still likes Black Cuervo). Afterwards, she immediately snaps out of her trance-like state, and calls in her mother and grandmother with her ear blasting call. In Eye Caramba it is known that the flock of fury has dated a number of Rivera men and a Rivera girl. The Flock of Fury was one of the competitors of the Super-Villain Grand Prix and finished last place because of El Tigre. Zoe and her alter ego both have still a crush on Manny/El Tigre. Now Zoe becomes a famous city singer who plays a bass and sings her most popular song "El Dia De Los Muertos" to Aaron Garcia, stays to be an ageless 14-year-old girl with him, and has a 12-year-old son Arzo Garcia/Black Pajaro.
    • Mrs. Aves/La Voltura: Mother of Zoe Aves/Black Cuervo and Daughter of Lady Gobbler. Rodolfo Rivera/White Pantera broke up with her at college.
    • Lady Gobbler: Grandmother of Zoe Aves/Black Cuervo and Mother of Mrs. Aves/La Voltura. She almost married Granpapi Rivera/Puma Loco, but the plans to marry him fell through.
    • Orlando Aves/Green Aguila: An 11-year-old brother of Zoe Aves/Black Cuervo. Mindy Rivera/La Huelga dumped him at Miracle City Elementary School.
  • Dr. Chipolte, Sr.: Father of Dr. Chipolte, Jr. He was put away 3 years ago by El Tigre and White Pantera. He was one of the villains that Maria Rivera tried to reform, however, he only used it as a cover to dig a tunnel into the Miracle City Mint. He acts and has a voice similar to his son's, he even has a robotic metal arm and eye like his and is allergic to Churros. He and his son also competed in the Super-Villain Grand Prix and were thrown at the skeleton banditos.
  • Diego/Dr. Chipolte Jr.: Like his father, Dr. Chipolte Sr., 10-year-old Mexican-American Diego a.k.a. Dr. Chipolte, Jr. is an evil mad scientist with a massive robotic metal arm and a cybernetic right eye. When Diego was just 7, he watched El Tigre and White Pantera put his father in jail and swore he'd get back at them some day. He uses strange weapons such as Zombie Guacamole, which is another thing he has in common with his father, who once robbed a bank using hot peppers mutated into monsters. He gets furious at the sound of Manny and Frida mispronouncing or completely messing up his name, such as "Dr. Habanara", "Dr. Paprika" or "Dr. Jalapeño". He yells out at the word, "DR. CHIPOLTE!!!"
  • El Oso: A large, hairy thug with superhuman strength. He spends most of his time causing chaos in Miracle City. His name literally means "the bear" in Spanish. Rumored to have been raised by bears, he is. He lives on the outskirts of Miracle City in Calavera, the criminal capital of the world. No matter how many times El Tigre or White Pantera puts El Oso behind bars, he manages to break out in time for dinner. He has a twin brother named El Osito. he can only speak bear and was born 3 minutes after El Oso.
  • General Chapuza: The coach of the Calavera soccer team, The Zombies. He, and his grandson, Che, and his entire team appear to be real zombies since they can remove and attach body parts at will. His soccer team apparently beat The Matadors when he and Grandpapi Rivera were kids. In Fool's Goal, his team yet again defeats the Matadors. He and his grandson were one of the competitors of the Super-Villain Grand Prix and got knocked out of the race of Sergio/Senor Siniestro.
  • Che/El Zombie Tigre: A 13-year-old grandson of General Chapuza. He looks similar to Manny/El Tigre, and is the lead player of a zombie soccer team. In the episode El Zombie Tigre, he creates a golden replica of Manny's belt to transform into El Zombie Tigre, who has an ear ripped off (literally), a dirty suit, golden claws and bone chains. Now Che becomes a famous punk lead singer and a guitarist of his favorite zombie band Los Calavera Muertos singing their most popular song "El Monstruo" to Bra, stays to be an ageless 13-year-old zombie boy with her, and has a 10-year-old son Bre.

However, when Rodolfo married Maria and had Manny, he realized that his family was more important than his sidekick, so he and the Titan went their separate ways. After that, The Titan tried to fight evil on his own, but failed, so he left town and turned to the dark side. After his return back, he begins blaming Manny for his misfortune. He has liquid metal arms that can morph themselves into nearly anything, such as hammers or drills. His main objective is to eliminate El Tigre and return to the old days before Manny. On one occasion, he duped Manny and Rodolfo into thinking he's given up his evil ways.
  • Calavera Banditos: Various criminals, evildoers and baddies who live in the rough-neck town of Calavera which means "Skull" in Spanish. These calavera banditos are also some of Sartana of the Dead's minions.
  • Hilary Cooke/Aqua Dragon: A 14-year-old British-American girl who was transferred to Miracle City from United Kingdom. She insults Frida Suarez/La Tigresa a lot, but she gets hit by Manny Rivera/El Tigre for insulting her. She also transforms herself into a dragon-themed supervillainess.

  • Señor Chapi: The Rivera family parrot. A dirty and tired looking bird, his dialogue is limited to "Viva pantalones!"
  • Odessa Suarez: Frida's evil 15-year-old sister, seen in Zebra Donkey!, she dresses in police style clothing (like her dad), and had a pet fish named Señorita Fishface, who died (which was somehow Manny's fault), and whom Manny replaced with a hamster wearing tiny snorkeling gear.

  • Principal Tonino: The friendly principal of the school Manny and Frida attend. He is a good guy and is nice to the students.
  • Vice-Principal Chakal: The mean old vice-principal of the school Manny and Frida attend. He is a bad guy and seems to despise both of them and would gladly have an excuse to expel them from their continuous return to detention and their tardiness.
  • Mrs. Lupita: A middle school teacher of Manny and Frida. In El Tigre, El Jefe, she punishes Aaron Garcia for not doing his homework.
  • Lorice Wiliams/La Cierva: A 15-year-old Canadian-American girl who comes to Miracle City from Canada. She always protects Manny/El Tigre. She also turns into a deer-themed superheroine.

  • Vera Eagle/Golden Falcon. A 14-year-old U.S. American girl who was transferred to Miracle City from the United States. She turns into a falcon-themed superheroine.
  • Raúl: Manny's mustache given to him by Dr. Chipotle, Jr. because Manny wanted to be an adult. It was given to Manny using the power of his belt buckle. • The Mighty Cheetar: Grandpapi's grandfather, The Justice Jaguar's father, Rodolfo's great-grandfather, and Manny's great-great grandfather. He was a supervillain like his grandson who wore a more primitive steam powered robot suit. He appeared in The Grave Escape when Manny and Frida were transported to the Land of the Dead and he, along with Manny's other relatives, helped stop Sartana. He is known as the "Scourge of the Seven Seas" and speaks with a pirate accent.

  • The Original El Tigre (El Tigre I): The original El Tigre, He, like Manny, couldn't decide whether to be a hero or a villain. The indecision drove him insane, causing him to develop a split personality. It is never reaveled what time period he lived in. Trivia

  • El Tigre is Nickelodeon's second Superhero, only second to Danny Phantom. Because the Danny Phantom Posters said "Nick's First Kid Superhero!"
  • Manny's eyes are brown, but in his superhero form, his eyes turn green. Like how in Danny Phantom, when his normal eyes are blue, and his ghost eyes are green.
  • According to Cold Hard Flash, the show itself is animated in Adobe Flash.
  • In El Tigre episode El Tigre, El Jefe, toward the end of the episode, Remy from Street Fighter III can be seen in the crowd. Plus, Chun-Li and Ryu can be seen in a few scenes of several episodes.
  • The source of each Rivera's superpowers is an article of clothing. Puma Loco's come from his Golden Sombrero of Chaos, White Pantera's come from his Bronze Boots of Truth, and El Tigre's come from his Mystic El Tigre Belt Buckle. Also, each piece of clothing is a type of metallic color. The Golden Sombrero of Chaos is, of course, gold. The Bronze Boots of Truth are, of course bronze. The belt buckle is silver, and the fact that the belt is in the middle and there clothings are on the top or bottom.
  • Manny's ability to transform into a superhero is similar to the Japanese toku shows, Kamen Rider, in which the heroes use a belt buckle as a transformation device.
  • Manny and Frida are based on the creators (who are from Tijuana, Mexico) when they were children.
  • There has been a running gag in the title cards, with one character standing closer to the image, showing only it's feet and legs, while the other stands far in the background. So far, this is seen in Sole of a Hero, Fistful of Collars, and The Mother Of All Tigres.
  • In "Dia De Los Malos", there was a scene where Santana imagines her power once she combines her Mystic Guitar with the Quezelcoatl Stone and an explosion occurs. There was a map and the explosion started in the Miami area. This may show where Miracle City is. Though this has happened in other shows and has not been accurate of the real location. Thus, numerous Mexican falgs has been displayed on public buildings, this could possibly reveal that the show transcures in Mexico.
  • During "The Late Manny Rivera," Sergio says "Cry havoc and let slip the cows of war.". This is a goof of Shakepeare's quote: "Cry havoc and let loose the dogs of war."
  • Manny and Frida run into Santana of the Dead more commonly than any other villain. El Oso Is next. Then Dr. Chipotle, Jr.
  • In "Sole of a Hero" When Manny says, "You're Super Macho!" to his Dad, it is a reference, to Jorge Guiterrez', one of the creators of the show nickname, "Super Macho." As known on his website, which is named After the show's company, Mexopolis.
  • Manny lives in a house on the top of a big building in Miracle City. The building name is Casa Del Macho. And Manny's mom's former mansion was named Casa Del Mariachi.
  • At the 2007 Comic-Con International, the producers said that in the next season (if there will be a next season), Manny will have his first kiss possibly with Zoe or Frida. They also showed in its entirety a new episode in the storyboard stage about the marriage of Puma Loco and Santana of the Dead which Manny attempts to stop.
  • Also at Comic-Con, Jorge Gutierrez said the concept of the show is partly based on his real life growing up in Mexico with an artist father and a grandfather who was in the military. He had seen his grandfather as "evil" and his father as "good", much like Manny's father and grandfather.
  • The style of animation bears a close resebelence to Ub Iwerks' style of animation.
  • A running gag is whenever a Rivera decides to do something, they follow with a cry of "This I swear!"
  • This show is similar to Mucha Lucha!
