Indiana Jones 4 is the working title of the anticipated fourth film in the Indiana Jones series, which is set to be released worldwide on Thursday, May 22, 2008.[1] The film had been in development hell since shortly after the release of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, with various screenwriters and false production starts. Shooting is to commence June 18 2007. Harrison Ford will return to play the title role.

Development

During the early 70s, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg made a deal with Paramount Pictures for five films about Indiana Jones.[2] Following the theatrical release of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989, producer Lucas decided to let the series end as he felt he could not think of a good plot device.[3] Director Steven Spielberg was still interested,[3] and at the 1994 Venice Film Festival actor Harrison Ford confirmed interest in reprising the lead role for a final time.[4] Lucas came up with a MacGuffin, "the best one we've ever found", but the other two men balked as it was too similar to the previous films.[3] In 1995 Lucas called Last Crusade writer Jeffrey Boam back to pen a script,[5] working with him over two years to take out the overtly familiar elements and convincing Spielberg and Ford to do his original plot device.[3]

Boam passed away of heart disease in 2000. M. Night Shyamalan was hired as his replacement with an intended 2002 shoot,[6] but he left because of what Ford described as "the failure of George and Steven to attend to him".[7] Lucas admitted that he would not be able to give the project his full attention until he completed the final Star Wars film in 2005.[8] They then approached Stephen Gaghan[8] and Tom Stoppard[9] to write a new screenplay.

With a title already planned,[10] Frank Darabont was hired in May 2002 to replace Shyamalan.[11] Darabont's screenplay was set in the 1950s, after the demise of the Nazi regime.[12] The script also features Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) and Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw) in one scene,[13] and it does not have Jones' son.[14] In December 2002, whilst promoting Catch Me if You Can, Spielberg said he planned to shoot two films before filming Indiana Jones 4 in 2004 for a release the year after. He also dismissed shooting it digitally.[15] Producer Frank Marshall declared that the film would not rely on CGI and instead use traditional special effects and stuntwork so as to be consistent with the previous films.[16] All of this unravelled in February 2004 when Lucas rejected the draft for reasons unknown,[17] although Spielberg had acclaimed it as the best since Raiders of the Lost Ark.[18]

Production

Jeff Nathanson was hired in October 2004 to write a completely new script,[19] which does not use any element of the previous draft.[20] Whilst shooting War of the Worlds in late 2004, Spielberg met with stuntman Vic Armstrong to discuss three stunt sequences he had envisioned.[3] Lucas stated around the release of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in 2005 that he did not plan to make any more Indiana Jones films after the fourth.[21] Producer Kathleen Kennedy also stated later in the year that the story takes place in the 1940s.[22]

As 2006 began, Ford declared that if the film was not made by 2008, then the filmmakers should simply forget about making the film.[23] In the same month, Spielberg confirmed Indiana Jones 4 as his next film, calling it "the sweet dessert I give those who had to chow down on the bitter herbs that I've used in Munich".[24] Though Spielberg said he would take a year off following the back-to-back production of War of the Worlds and Munich,[25] he still worked tirelessly on the script, hiring David Koepp on June 23 2006 to polish the screenplay in conjunction with him and Lucas.[26] As Raiders of the Lost Ark celebrated its 25th anniversary, Marshall reiterated using traditional special effects in the film.[3]

On December 29, 2006, George Lucas confirmed that he, Steven Spielberg, and David Koepp finished polishing Jeff Nathanson's script, and that Indiana Jones 4 would commence filming in 2007. However, the exact shooting locations have yet to be determined, although part of the film will be shot in Los Angeles, California. Lucas noted that the film will be a "character piece" that will include "very interesting mysteries".[27] Koepp said that the film will address Ford's age.[28]

Shooting will begin on June 18 2007.[29] To prepare for the role, Ford's fitness routine consisted of three hours a day at the gym and a high protein diet of fish and vegetables.[30]

In an interview with comingsoon.net, George Lucas teased that the film would feature a waterfall location and that "the action scenes will be more suspenseful" then fast paced. He also said that Indy will get "beat up" in the new film, being an Indy film tradition.
