The Cup of the Austrian Football Association was played for the 39th time in the 1971/72 season.
The final was played in two games. In the first leg in front of 12,000 spectators on Wiener Sportclub Platz , the Wiener Sport-Club prevailed against SK Rapid Wien with 2-1 (0-1). The second leg in front of 14,000 visitors on the Hütteldorfer Pfarrwiese brought a 2: 1 (0: 1) in regular time. Thus the game went into extra time , in which the green-whites ultimately prevailed 3-1 thanks to the decisive goal by Bernd Lorenz . It was the eighth cup win for SK Rapid Wien. Defending champion FK Austria Wien failed in the quarterfinals at First Vienna FC .
