action

Nebraska in 1922. Wilfred James lives in his Hemingford Home with his wife Arlette and son Henry. Wilfred is just as proud of this as of the 30 hectares of land that surrounds it and has been in the family for several generations. When Arlette's father dies and she inherits another 40 hectares from him, she wants to move to the city and leave the arduous life in the country behind. Wilfred is not very enthusiastic about the idea, because he never wanted to leave the country of his fathers. She wants to divorce him and force him to sell the house. He then murders Arlette by slitting her throat one night. Together with Henry he hides the body in a well behind the barn. In the following he is pursued by rats and apparitions of his dead wife, which drives him increasingly mad. Henry disappears with his pregnant girlfriend. Together they commit several robberies and ultimately die while trying to escape the police. Wilfred, increasingly a victim of his visions, has to sell his house and land. He writes a suicide note, whereupon the ghosts of his dead family appear to him and announce that everything else will go very quickly.
