The Belgian Autobahn 21 , also on French. Autoroute 21 or Dutch Called Autosnelweg 21 , it starts in Antwerp and ends in Retie on the Dutch border. Their total length is 45 km. It connects the port of Antwerp with the Dutch A67 and the German A40 with the Ruhr area .

course

The A21 runs completely through the province of Antwerp . It begins at the Ranst motorway junction , where it branches off from the A13 . In the further course it meets the national roads N14 , N19 and N18 , until it merges with the A67 at the Dutch border , which continues to Eindhoven .

history

Before the European road network was revised in 1986, today's sections E17 (Antwerp-Lille) and E34 (Antwerp-Eindhoven) were signposted as E3. Both sections at that time were planned as a continuous motorway and were implemented as this. Today's A21 is a section of this route. The first section of the A21 from Ranst to Zoersel was opened in 1973. The section from Zoersel to Turnhout- West was completed a year earlier . The last section Turnhout-West - Dutch border was opened to traffic in 1973.

Status

Today the A21 is in a very bad condition. The original concrete surface from the opening years 1972/1973 is still on the motorway. The renovation work began in 2006. First, potholes in the concrete were filled with asphalt. A renovation of the entire route is planned, with an asphalt surface being covered. In addition, the lighting is to be renewed. Guard rails and signs should also be replaced. In addition, the driveways are to be paved and improved. In the spring of 2014, the road surface between the Ranst junction and the Zoersel exit was renewed, and contemporary "whisper asphalt" was built.
