The Brumbies ( called ACT Brumbies until 2005 ; also known as CA Technologies Brumbies in connection with the main sponsor ) are a rugby union team from the Australian capital of Canberra . It plays in the international super rugby league and represents the Australian Capital Territory (hence the former abbreviation ACT) and the southern part of New South Wales .

The team is named after the wild Brumby horses that live in the Canberra hinterland. The home stadium is Canberra Stadium , which the Brumbies share with the rugby league team Canberra Raiders . The team colors are navy blue, white and yellow. The mascot is called Brumby Jack .

The Brumbies were created in 1996 to provide a third Australian team for the newly formed Super 12 league (now Super Rugby). Since the team consisted of supposedly “second-rate” players at the beginning, it was predicted that it would end very quickly. But since then the Brumbies have reached the championship finals five times and have won them twice, something no other Australian team has achieved so far. In 2001 they defeated the Sharks from South Africa and in 2004 the Crusaders from New Zealand .
