The A Grupa 1956 was the 32nd season of the highest Bulgarian football league . ZDNA Sofia became champion for the third time in a row and for the sixth time.

mode

The league was reduced to twelve clubs. The teams played against each other twice on a total of 22 match days, divided into a first round and a second half. The last one went straight to the B Grupa ; the penultimate played in the relegation group with the six winners of the second division groups for two places for the following season.
