mode
The 16 teams played against each other twice on a total of 30 match days, divided into a first and a second round. The descent was reorganized. The two bottom of the table were relegated directly and were replaced by the two winners of the north and south groups of the B Grupa .
There were no points for a 0-0.
Season course
Levski-Spartak Sofia took over the championship lead on matchday 11 after a 5-0 win against the previous leaders Lokomotiv Sofia. They defended their first place until the end of the season and in the end they had five points ahead of CSKA Sofia.
Four days after the last match day, the cup final between Levski-Spartak and CSKA took place. The game was marked by many questionable decisions, numerous brutal fouls, some red cards and an attack on the referee. This also led to confrontations in the stands. By order of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Bulgaria , both clubs were banned from the A Grupa and dissolved. Some players were banned from three to twelve months and six players were banned for life. A year later the decision was reversed and the players continued their careers.
The games of Levski-Spartak and CSKA on the 30th matchday were rated with a 0: 3 defeat for both clubs. This mainly helped Dunaw Russe , who thereby escaped descent. Levski-Spartak was deprived of the championship title and, like the second CSKA, was not allowed to compete in the European Cup. No club was reported for the European Cup Winners' Cup . The championship title was awarded to third-placed Trakia Plovdiv, who then also represented Bulgaria in the national championship cup. The fourth and fifth played in the UEFA Cup .
Eventually most of the sanctions were lifted and the two clubs were able to participate in the championship again the following year, albeit under different names. Levski-Spartak was renamed Sredez and Levski-Spartak in Vitosha. In 1990 Levski-Spartak Sofia got the championship title back, CSKA Sofia won the cup.
