Adolf Karl Theodor Friedrich von Hertzberg (born July 28, 1820 in Danzig , † January 2, 1910 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Adolf was a son of the Prussian major Friedrich von Hertzberg (1790–1861) and his wife Emilie, née von Gerlach (1797–1870).

Military career

After attending grammar school in Danzig, Hertzberg joined the 5th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a musketeer on November 1, 1839 , and was promoted to second lieutenant by the end of February 1842 . From April 9 to October 14, 1846 he was assigned to the Infantry Training Battalion and then to the General War School until mid-March 1848 for further training . During this time he was transferred to the Guard Reserve Infantry Landwehr Regiment on March 27, 1847 and appointed battalion adjutant on November 1, 1848. On May 2, 1849, Hertzberg took his leave as prime lieutenant and entered as such on May 7, 1849 in Mecklenburg-Schwerin services. There he became an adjutant in the 2nd Musketeer Battalion on October 1, 1849 . He joined the Light Infantry Battalion on October 29, 1851 and was assigned to the General Staff on September 18, 1852. There he was promoted to captain on April 6, 1856 , and transferred to the Grenadier Guard Battalion as a company commander on June 1, 1857 . On July 28, 1858, he joined Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II as a wing adjutant . Promoted to major on October 5, 1860, he took part in the battles at Oberselk, Nübel, Strup, Rackebüll and Veile as well as the Sturm in 1864 during the war against Denmark on the Düppeler Schanzen . For this he received the Order of the Red Eagle III. Class with swords, the Military Merit Cross and the Order of the Iron Crown III. Class with war decorations. On June 19, 1864 he took his leave from the Mecklenburg service.

On June 20, 1864, Hertzberg returned to the Prussian service as a major and was accepted into the General Staff . On July 14, 1864, he was given leave to go to France and England. There he visited the camps in Chalons and Aldershot . After his return he was transferred to the General Staff of the 5th Division on December 10, 1864 . He was awarded the Düppeler Sturmkreuz on April 11, 1865 and promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 8, 1866 . During the German War he fought near Gitschin and Königgrätz . For this he received the Crown Order III on September 20, 1866 . Class with swords and on September 25, 1866 the Mecklenburg Military Merit Cross 1st Class. Hertzberg was from August 16, 1866 to July 19, 1867 in command of the III. Battalions in the Magdeburg Fusilier Regiment No. 36 . He then became Chief of the General Staff of the VII Army Corps and rose to colonel at the end of March 1868 .

During the mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , Hertzberg was on July 18, 1870 Oberquartiermeister in the high command of the 2nd Army under Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia . For the further duration of the mobile relationship he had received command of the 6th Rhenish Infantry Regiment No. 68 on December 16, 1870 and acted as the leader of the 32nd Infantry Brigade from December 27, 1870 to March 15, 1871 . Hertzberg took part in the battles at Vionville , Gravelotte , Orleans , Bapaume , Beaugency , Saint-Quentin and the siege of Metz and the enclosure of Péronne . For his work he was awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , the Comtor of Honor of the Oldenburg House and Merit Order of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig and the Commander's Cross First Class of the Grand Ducal Hessian Order of Ludwig .

After the preliminary peace at Versailles , Hertzberg was appointed commander of the 6th Rhenish Infantry Regiment No. 68 on March 29, 1871. With the rank and fees of a brigade commander, he was transferred to the army officers on July 4, 1872, as well as commanding the 51st Infantry Brigade in Württemberg . Left in this command, Hertzberg joined the army officers à la suite on October 31, 1872, and advanced to major general at the end of March 1873. He was recalled from Württemberg on January 4, 1876 and appointed commander of the 43rd Infantry Brigade in Kassel . Hertzberg married on October 19, 1865 in Frankfurt (Oder) Anna von Gerlach (1838-1919), a daughter of the police chief Karl von Gerlach . The children Frieda (1866–1867), Magdalena (* 1861), Helmut (1870–1871), Karl (* / † 1872) and Adolf (* 1874) resulted from the marriage.
