Adolf Freiherr von Sell (born August 15, 1797 in Ludwigslust , † March 26, 1891 in Schwerin ) was a Mecklenburg general of the infantry , diplomat and court official.

Life

Adolf von Sell came from the Mecklenburg branch of the noble family of sell . He was brought up together with the Hereditary Grand Duke Paul Friedrich , who was three years his junior . On January 14, 1815 Sell joined the Kaiser Franz Grenadier Regiment of the Prussian Army and in the same year took part in the capture of Paris as a second lieutenant during the campaign . After the peace treaty he was adjutant of the 2nd Battalion from 1820 to 1824 and then graduated from the General War School until 1827 . In the meantime Sell had become Prime Lieutenant on April 12, 1826 . On February 13, 1830, he was approved to leave as captain with the right to wear regimental uniform.

Then Sell was appointed governor of the Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Franz and was responsible for his education until 1842. In 1843 Sell became a member of the palace construction commission for Schwerin Palace . From 1849 he headed the court of Grand Duchess Auguste as head court master until her death in 1862. In 1850 he was appointed major general. After the Grand Duchess' death in 1862, he was Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary for Mecklenburg-Schwerin at the Prussian court until 1868 .

In 1868 he returned to Schwerin as chief steward of the Grand Duchess Marie . In 1874 he was promoted to general of the infantry. With a decree of January 11, 1882 he received the Mecklenburg-Schwerinsche recognition of the title of baron . Most recently he was Lord Chamberlain of the grand ducal court. From 1867 to 1888 he was the first commander of the Order of St. John for the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg ( Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz ).

Since June 1, 1833 he was married to Sophie Fredericke Henriette Charlotte, née von Massenbach (1804–1842). Of the couple's children, the sons Friedrich and Wilhelm (1842–1922) served in the Prussian army. His descendants include the writer Sophie Charlotte von Sell , the officer Ulrich von Sell and the director Friedrich-Wilhelm von Sell .

In 2009, Friedrich-Wilhelm von Sell donated the portrait of Adolf von Sell painted by Theodor Fischer to the Schwerin State Museum for the castle museum. Today it hangs in the adjutant's room at Schwerin Castle .
