Anneke van Giersbergen (born March 8, 1973 in Sint-Michielsgestel ) is a Dutch singer and guitarist . From 1994 to 2007 she was active as a singer in the Dutch progressive rock band The Gathering . After leaving, she devoted herself mainly to her project Agua de Annique , followed in 2012 by the first studio album purely under her own name.

biography

At the age of twelve, van Giersbergen sang in the choir of her school. A short time later she took singing lessons and joined her first band . Before joining the band The Gathering in 1994, van Giersbergen went through various bands, including a speed metal band called Seventh Episode . In addition to The Gathering, van Giersbergen also belongs to the Bad Breath duo, who play a mixture of blues , jazz , funk and folk . Her musical roots are in classical and jazz music. Her greatest musical influences include Prince , Ella Fitzgerald, and Thom Yorke . In the metal field, Metallica , Anthrax and Death Angel were among her influences. Through her older brother she also got to know progressive rock bands like Pink Floyd , Marillion and Yes .

In 2006 she was awarded the Devil Award of the Nationaal Pop Instituut as best singer. In June 2007 she announced that she would leave The Gathering in August and work with her own band called Agua de Annique . In addition to her, this consists of guitarist Joris Dirks, bassist Jacques de Haard and her husband Rob Snijders on drums. The first album, Air , was released on October 26, 2007. Kristin Fjellseth appears as a guest singer . Compared to the albums by The Gathering, it is much quieter and more ballad-oriented. It was characterized as atmospheric guitar pop. In 2009, Agua de Annique decided to focus more on Anneke van Giersbergen. The homepage was revised accordingly and the new album Pure Air was released under their name. It was released on January 30, 2009 and guest musicians include Sharon den Adel , Danny Cavanagh ( Anathema ), Marike Jager, John Wetton , Niels Geusebroek, Arjen Lucassen and Kyteman . In 2011 Anneke van Giersbergen played in the opening act for Within Temptation and joined the Maiden uniteD project , which acoustically covers the songs of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden . The debut album Mind the Acoustic Piece was released in December 2010. In September 2011 Anneke van Giersbergen, who had since separated from management and the record label, released a new single, Feel Alive . In December of the same year Anneke worked with the Dutch band Lorrainville and released a live album with them called “Some December evening”. The rock-influenced album Everything is Changing was released in January 2012 on the PIAS Netherlands label and debuted at number 11 on the Dutch album charts.

Since 2014 Anneke van Giersbergen has been touring together with Liv Kristine and Kari Rueslåtten under the band name The Sirens . Also in 2014 Anneke founded the band The Gentle Storm together with Arjen Lucassen . The band released their debut album The Diary in March 2015 and will play at the Night of the Prog Festival in July 2015 . The progressive metal band Vuur developed from the live band of The Gentle Storm and released their debut album In This Moment We Are Free - Cities in October 2017 .

Guest appearances

Van Giersbergen appeared several times as a guest singer. With the German band Farmer Boys she recorded a cover version of the Depeche Mode song Never let me down again . The Dutchwoman can also be heard on the album Icon II (Rubicon) by John Wetton and Geoff Downes and worked on the Ayreon project (on the albums Into The Electric Castle (1998) and 01011001 (2008)). She later appeared on the napalm death album Smear Campaign . Van Giersbergen also had a guest appearance on the song Scorpion Flower on the 2008 album Night Eternal by the Portuguese band Moonspell .

She can also be heard on the live albums Black Symphony and An Acoustic Night At The Theater by Within Temptation in the song Somewhere in a duet with Sharon den Adel . From May to September 2009 she recorded the album Addicted with Devin Townsend , where she took over most of the vocals. The collaboration with Devin Townsend Project continued on the albums Epicloud (2012) and Z2 / Sky Blue (2014). She lent her voice to the track What Could Have Been on November's Doom's album Aphotic . Another duet with John Wetton can be heard on his album Raised in Captivity .

She can also be heard on Amorphis' song "Amongst Stars" on the 2018 album "Queen of Time" .

Private

Van Giersbergen is married to former Kong drummer Rob Snijders. She gave birth to a son in February 2005.
