Alberto Abalde Díaz (born December 15, 1995 in Ferrol ) is a Spanish basketball player . He plays in the position of the small forward .

career

Alberto Abaldes first stations as a junior were the school teams from Lugo Compañía de María , Salesianos and especially Maristas El Pilar , where he spent a total of five seasons from 2004 to 2010. In the summer of 2010, the then 14-year-old Abalde switched to the youth academy of Joventut de Badalona . In Joventut he held various youth teams and won in the 2012/13 season with the U-19, the prestigious and as part of the Euro League discharged Nike International Junior Tournament . In the final his team prevailed against FC Barcelona with 82:59 and Abalde, who had 18 points and nine rebounds in the final , was voted MVP of the tournament.

That season he played his first adult games in the ranks of CB Prat , a team associated with Joventut Badalona and playing in the third division ( LEB Plata). At CB Prat he would also spend the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons, the latter in the LEB Oro, the second Spanish division. At the same time, the then 18-year-old Abalde celebrated his debut in the ACB League on March 2, 2014 with Joventut Badalona in a game against CB Valladolid . In the 2014/15 season, he also played a total of 23 games in the first division with Joventut, but mostly came off the bench. For the 2015/16 season he was finally included in Badalona's first squad and played his way into the Catalans' regular team . On average, he came to 7 points and 2.3 rebounds that season. Abalde had his breakthrough at Joventut Badalona in the 2016/17 season, with 10.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game, he became one of the pillars of the team and at the end of the season was promoted to the ACB All- Tournament Young Team of the best players under the age of 22 elected.

His talent did not go unnoticed and so the reigning Spanish champions Valencia Basket Club secured the services of the young small forward in the summer of 2017 . With these he celebrated his debut in the EuroLeague on October 2nd, 2017 , where his team finished 11th. He himself brought it to 7.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in his first participation in the highest European club competition. In the 2018/19 season he and his team should win their first title in the adult division. Valencia Basket Club prevailed in the final play-off for the EuroCup with 2: 1 against Alba Berlin to achieve the fourth victory in the second highest European competition. The ACB league finished the team after being eliminated in the semifinals in third place. Alberto Abalde had his best season in the ranks of the Valencians in the 2019/20 season. In the season overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic , he achieved 8.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in the basic round of the championship and increased his statistics in the final tournament for the title that his team ultimately won finished in third place, on 14.8 points, 3 rebounds and 3.8 assists. He was then selected for his services in the ACB League All-Tournament Second Team . He finished the EuroLeague 2019/20 when the competition was abandoned with an average of 7.8 points, 4 rebounds and 1.7 assists.

For the 2020/21 season he moved to the then Spanish record champions Real Madrid , where he signed a contract dated until 2025.

National team

Alberto Abalde made his debut in the course of the U-17 World Cup 2012 in Kaunas in the Spanish national team, where his team finished fourth. The following year he won the bronze medal with the U-18s at the European Championship with a 57:56 in the game for third place against Latvia. In 2014 and 2015 he failed with the Spanish team at the U-20 European Championships in the final with 57:65 against Turkey and 64:70 against Serbia.

He made his debut in the senior squad on July 21, 2016 in a friendly against Lithuania in preparation for the Olympic Games . He made it to two more appearances in friendly matches against Venezuela , but ultimately failed to make it into the final squad. In the course of qualifying for the 2019 World Basketball Championship , he made six appearances and stood out in particular in the main round , where he averaged 7.5 points and 2.5 rebounds. Once again, however, he was not included in the final squad, which ultimately won the title in China .

Trivia

Alberto Abalde Díaz is the son of former professional basketball player Alberto Abalde Rodríguez , who played 154 games in the ACB League from 1986 to 1992 in the ranks of OAR Ferrol . His sister Tamara Abalde , who is six years older than him, is also a professional basketball player and a Spanish national player . With her country, she won bronze at the European Championships in 2009 and the gold medal in 2019 .
